Thread Starter | Is there a lower-priced, Monitor significantly better than HS80M?
Hi Guys- So far I am focused on the HS80M, but am interested if there is a monitor in the high end that is significantly better at an incremental price increase over the 80's. Also, would I need to invest $$$ to buy components to support any such speaker? Thanks if u can help!
Kurt
Btw, using them for at-home listening of electro, techno music like Deadmau5, Skrillex etc

If you don't need them for mixing, check the Behringer Truth B2031. They sound really nice IMO, unfortunately they sometimes sound too nice for mixing.

The NS10 is not high end. There are many recording studios with Auratones and SM57s, but they are not high end.
High end gear tends to be superb, incomparably better than most other stuff out there...

For listening at home Alesis M1active 520 or 620 or Esi active 05 or 08 will do great.
I got the first and love them.

NS10Ms are shit. They just translate well.
I'd also say an 'upgrade' from the 80s is to get a pair of 50s. I had them both, and preferred the 50s hands down...and they're cheaper! Lol

I used to REALLY enjoy listening to hours of cranked music on my HS50Ms plus the HS sub. goes really loud and sounds great.

I used to mix on Quested 5B (considered high-end) and since I've been using the HS80, my mixes started to translate much better. For what it's worth, I think they're awesome!

The NS10s are not a good example. They are compromised in almost every way a speaker can be... Quote:

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk | Actually wanting to make something which sounds special, not just something which 'translates'. NS10s are no use here, for most anyway.

Thanks very much Guys. Thoroughly confused now!!
What would sound best with music like Deadmaus or dubstep?
Should I go with the 50's with woofer or just the 80's
Maybe the A5X with sub, or A7X?
I want a mind-blowing combo that will slam the beats cleanly and deeply. Thanks again |

In my opinion, with a sub especially, the 50s are WAY less fatiguing... My opinion is 50 + subs, or maybe the setup I'm using currently (KH 120As with HS10w sub). Dynamite IMO.

Well, you're trying to solve a few problems...
1. Translates well.
2. Reduced fatigue in long sessions.
3. Budget.
4. Listening pleasure.
A while back, I upgraded from a pair of Wharfdale Diamond Pros to Tannoy System 12s. I don't think my mixes translate significantly better on the Tannoys, but mixing is a MUCH more pleasant experience! The Tannoys have a wonderfully smooth, clear high end, deeper bass, and more dynamic punch by far. But even used bargain-price, they were far more expensive.

That being said don't buy anything "Fostex".
Love HS80s though!!!

I owned Fostex PMO.5's for like seven years, back when I bought a firepod in like 2005.
I loved them til I went to school and heard Genelecs, Tannoys, NS10s (yep) and high end KRKs.
Now I rock the Behringer 2031As with no regrets at all.

You should try and hear a few prior to buying before parting with your cash unless you have the option to return them.
That being said the hs80m is a good budget monitor, possibly one of the best but can sound a bit sterile, i don't enjoy listening to music on them as much as i did my Event TR8s which i think are great all rounders, only available used though.
First thing that sprung to mind when i saw the thread was the Equator Audio D5s, you have 60 days to try them as well. Only 5" so you'll probably want a sub and if it's just for listeining why not look at things like the Wharfedale SPC8 or 10? Sealed cabinets so will give you more accurate bass. There are also options like MJ Acoustics, Rel or BK.
