Affordable Tube Mic Pre for Recording Synths ??

So.......what does everyone out there recommend for a good sounding affordable outboard Tube Mic Pre for recording Synthesizers ?? I'll be recording some Digital Synths into ProTools LE thru a DIGI 001 and would like to warm them up some.

I don't know of any affordable tube pres that I'm fired up about. You're probably better off taking a look at a solid-state pre that is coupled with a transformer.

What is the "Phoenix" DI ?? I'm not familiar with it. Do they have a website where I can get some info ?? What does it cost ??

If you want some real hi end color check out the sebatron range of preamps. They are valve based with some interesting eq options . You can run them cool and transparent or very hot. OR You can chain two channels together for a very very HOT sound.

I agree with War. If you are not needing to mic' the synths' thru an amp, I'll just go with a good tube/transformer based DI..! ( i.e...Phoenix, Groove Tube Ditto, A-Design's Reddi, TAB, etc.) Although, you will need two of each for stereo, except the Phoenix which is a stereo DI....!.....

yeah stick to a di and save some money, the gt ditto is pretty good, add some colour to your synths and samplers but apparently the ditto is not made anymore and you can get the gt brick for a little more and have a useable mic pre as well.

iver heard good things about radial for tracking synths and samplers. that could be another option.

True but as a result you can find Dittos quite cheap on e-bay. When they introduced the Brick, it kind of took over the market niche for the Dittos since some think that you might as well get a pre while you are at it -- but if you only really need a DI -- then they've become real deals. Typically $100 - 150 or so. I have two of them and like them alot.

Here's another vote for the Phoenix Nice DI - it's awesome on synths.

Here's another vote for the REDDI as well! I use this for my mono synths, and yes it's great on rhodes too!

how, talking about sound, do the Phoenix and Reddi compare with the old Drawmer 1960 (obviously this has more features, I know) ?
Thanks.
