I need a tailor-made recommendation on a new mic.

I'm looking for a new mic. I've always included Gearslutz at the end of my google searches but never actually asked here personally lol. I'm kind of a HipHop/R&B singer similar to probably Kid Cudi and Drake. The mic i use and have used for the past few years is an M-Audio Producer USB.. I'm good at engineering and i have indeed fooled people with expensive studios mostly because of my engineering. With that being said i need a non usb mic for relatively under 100 bucks. I figured since im pretty good with mixing i don't have to go all out just yet but i believe i should be able to get better quality with a phantom powered mic. Any suggestion?

Here is a link to a song i engineered. Overdose - Karina Kapri ft. Marc Snipes - YouTube i know too much reverb etc trust me i know. Just a guideline to help me find a mic for my voice.

Hey Karina - I checked out a few of your other songs also and I really dig your voice.

I'm kind of in a similar situation looking for a decent vocal Mic. Up till now I've pretty much been doing my demos with my trusty SM58. Obviously solid but I know there's something better out there.

I'm looking at maybe an AKG C214 and a few folks have recommended the Beyer M88. But from what I've seen so far though - both of those are closer to the $300-400 range.

AKG is a good choice. I'm also looking at a C214.

I currently have a Perception 120. I too fool people by mixing well... this mic has allowed me to do that. I get a nice clean signal in, and can model it how I need. You should be able to find a used one from Guitar Center's Used Gear list for well under $100, and even a new one for around $100 or so.

Thanks for the replies! I'm definitely going to check out both the Perception and the MXL mic. With that being said how does it compare to the AT2020? That's the mic I've been TRYING to get. A person i use to do music with i believe has it in their home studio and i sound good on it.

I would stay away from used mics. I dont know about you, but other peopel spit om a mic that im singing into really freaks me out. you also do not know if that mic has been dropped or thrown.

One of the things i never buy used are microphones and cars. Maybe im too anal ,but i would stay away from used mics.

So I guess when you go in a studio, you always bring your own mics?

Just give them the old smell test

wow...for me, the price to quality ratio is worth the risk of buying used. I mean, why pay 1000 dollars for a mic when you can get the same thing used for 500 bucks?

My guitar amp or bass amp or drums dont care if there is spit in the mic. I dont sing and if i did, i would bring my own mic into a recording studio. like i said, having others people spit and spew in my face where i can smell it is pretty gross to me

Right.

I mean, what if you bought the mic from someone who had a fetish for anchovies?

It's one thing with a 58. If your condenser is absorbing so much sputum that it's giving off a smell something's gone horribly wrong. And I doubt your mic sounds very good anymore.

I'm petty sure if you were a singer you'd go ahead and use the mic that sounded best on your voice like the rest of the world, and not give a damn if it had been used before. I mean really.

Loose as a Julius Caesar on the beach. I think mayhaps you mistook me for someone who could get upset about another man's micing habits. Have a laugh?

Good point. If I got a label deal and they sent me to Abby Road, I would definitely not sing into any of the Neumanns the Beatles used. I'd bring my cheap MXL and demand to use it instead.
