8+ input audio interface without preamps - ideas?

I've recently rediscovered the joys of plugging my external synths and FX into cubase via Steinberg's External FX and External Instruments functionality, but I am rather limited by my audio cards 8 out 2 in capability.

Does anyone have any reccomendations for a 8+ input audio card that has few or none preamps? - I rarely use microphones, and if I did I'd rather use the preamps that are on my desk, so I'd rather not pay for unwanted features on the card.

Also, digital inputs are pretty useless to me - unless someone suggests, for example, an adat card with an external adat input module - none of my synths and FX except for the virus have any kind of digital outputs.

What i really want is a firewire interface in a 19" rack box with 16+ real, jack inputs on it that I can plug my gear into and 10+ real. jack outputs that can go to my mixer/FX units etc.

I also don't want to spend a huge ammount - under £400 if possible. A card like this should be pretty simple and cheap to build without the "fancy" preamps etc. I don't care about DSP mixing, or DSP effects or level meters..

Any suggestions would be welcomed

Cheers
TS

(PS - I'm starting to think after a bit of research that no-one makes this ind of thing for less that £1500 and my only options might be to add another interface to my system and hope that Asio4all can combine it into my system, or buy a cheapo digital mixing board with ADAT output and a new soundcard with ADAT input - but I'd still be paying for a bunch of stuff I don't want/need. There must be other project studios that don't record bands out there!)

Thanks for the suggestions guys -

the delta 1010 was a card I was looking at when I got my focusrite - same price if I remeber correctly, I never thought I'd need the extra IO (lolz) - the only problem with that (and I should have specified this in the original post) is that my computers are in a seperate room hat is about 2m away from my desk - cables are fed through a small hole in the wall to maintain a bit of silence in the production room. I don't think I'd fit the 1010's cable through the hole and I don't think iot would be long enough :(

the 2626 looks great, but I'm still paying for preamps I' never going to use.

I saw in new products that Behringer are about to release an 8in 8out for $249 called the FCA1616 - but I've heard bad things about their quality and drivers..

any other suggestions?

thanks again for taking the time

T

Have a look at Echo Fire 8 or Echo Fire 12.

RME multiface, you can get a used one on Ebay (especially the old series) relatively cheap.

Echo Audiofire 12 is exactly what you are looking for?

I'd advise against the FW1814. Nothing wrong with the unit per se but the unbalanced ins and increasingly slow driver support made me sell mine just this week.

Yea that's true about drivers support, but they are pretty current right now.

And most synths are umbalanced.

I've been using my for 4 years.its pretty solid unit.and I less it on 24/7!

Like I said, nothing wrong with it but the driver support is slowing down and with M-Audios current situation I wouldn't bet on it picking up for the next 5 years or so. I've happily used mine since 2006, I think. If you're not planning on upgrading your OS for a while, go for it. It's not going to be a long-term solution, though.

I was seconds before buying the ECHO AUDIOFIRE 12, though. If line inputs and channel count at very good quality and a decent price are what you're after, I believe this is your best choice.

Thanks for all the replys!

I'm going to do some research - one of my first cards was the echo Gina - I'm quite tempted by the Echo 12

Yea it took over a year for them to update my midisport 4x4.

But the anniversary model got updated drivers for windows 7 right away.

Osx was also available for my unit right away.

Do you think Windows support is slower than MAC?

I almost bought the anniversary edition it took so Damn long!

It felt like they dropped support for the midisport I had.but almost 2 years later, the drivers were released, that's sad!
