Good low-end compressor for squashing the daylights out of something?

Umm... I was going to suggest a Microlimiter, but after listening to that I would almost suggest a couple of distortion pedals. Something sounds like its hit way too hard there to me. Not necessarily run through a compressor (but maybe?)

Sounds kinda cool though.

Yeah, that just sounds like the gain up so loud, it was peaking, and then it bounced and turned back to tolerable levels.

the standard audio level-or is capable of destroying stuff like that if you start to max out the settings. has 2 modes, crunch and level.

you'd be needing the cruch mode.

Sounds like it's being mega over-limited to me, though I'm sure similar results could be attained by overloading a mixer.

Will look into the microlimiter though. Cheers.

It's a plugin, but check out Blockfish. It's free. I love it more than almost anything when I am trying to destroy a sound in the mix. Also, much more expensive (than $0), but Soundtoys Decapitator is very useful. If I was trying to make that sound from the hardware I have used, cranking a Hamptone preamp into an Overstayer compressor might do, but that's a lot of money. Otherwise, reamping to a guitar distortion pedal or amp might be pretty fun and economical, like The Spark said.
