MD421 flavor for less?

I've seen some of cheap dynamics being compared to MD421 namely:
Senn e845
Prodipe TT1

What say ye, low-end theorists?

The Senn e845 is a nice mic but it aint no 421. I have not heard any mic that sounds and behaves like a 421. It just has a distinct sound. The other mic you mentioned I have not heard.

Tjena !

I have been very close to ordering the t.bone CD 56 Beta for exactly that reason since i compared alot of soundclips on Thomanns site in search of a good tom mic. We already have a cheap TSM set (from 4sound) that has worked ok so far in combination with the other mics we use on the drumkit, but it would certainly be interesting to try out this mic and i am still very tempted to order one to test out.

If you compare the soundclip of the MD421 and the CD 56 they actually sound very similar on most sources they recorded and the MD421 cost very close to ten times more than the CD56.

Compare for yourself.

the t.bone CD 56 beta - Thomann Cyberstore Sverige

Sennheiser MD421U-2 - Thomann Cyberstore Sverige

I have also found that the t.bone MB85 beta mic ( i have bought three myself) is a better alternative to the SM58 at well below half the price (almost a third), it actually sounds very close to the shure beta 58.

Hallå. Ive some milage with 421 and I got myself a TT1 recently. They have definitive similarities. Reserved, polite, correct and a bit muted. If u like that sorta thing the TT1 is a bargain

I think that the TT1 and 421 have a similar flavor. One of the things that they have in common is that they both sound great on drums.

Wink

The Sennheiser 521 "Blackfire" (same as 421 without EQ switch) tended to go for less.

Not the same at all, but IMHO the Shure Beta 57a is somewhat underated as a general all-rounder.

Listened to some D2 and MD241 A-B clips, sound is not very far from MD421.
