8 analog/line input firewire interface

they seem to all be in the $700-1200 range. I was looking for something to compliment my Altec Lansing 1678C modded pres that are currently going through a tascam us-1641. I don't need any more pres, just a firewire port and 8 analog inputs. and some good converters.

I couldn't agree more. I don't want to tick off other manufacturers in this range---but this is my favorite interface. The sound quality, features, options, expandability, and overall value is just hard to beat. The ONLY thing I don't like is that there are (2) inputs on the front and (6) on the back. Then again if all were on the back what if you wanted to do a quick patch.....or if all were on the front and you wanted to hard-wire into a patchbay, oooooh can't please us all! LOL

The Profire 2626 you can bypass the mic pre amps by going into the line inputs. Decent conversion, tons of features, expandable. And runs $699 new.

Yes, this appears to be the lowest dollar option for line in and non of the other stuff that finds its way onto most interfaces. They also have a 12 channel version. Check them out: Echo Digital Audio Corporation

Sweetwater dropped the price down to 399 for a new profire 2626. That's a great deal.

I don't know if it's just sweetwater, with that price, but I ran into that this morning.

If you are on osx metric halo and save yourself the time - amazing in every way. Spam here: I'm selling or trading in my 2882 with 2d card to buy another mh unit - uln2. They are an amazing company

If you can go up to the 1200 price range, and have a desktop, I would also consider a pci interface, like for example the RME multiface I or II. IMHO they are worth the price because of the stability and low latency you can get. I can assure you the RME's are rock solid quality and very well built. I wouldn't be afraid of buying the multiface second hand, since it's built like a tank, and the more delicate pci card has to be built separately, so you could buy that new. Hope this helps!
Peace.

Its other places as well, because avid is divesting m-audio and their other consumer lines.

Avid Sells Off Consumer Side; Numark – Avid – Akai – M-Audio Becomes New Giant
BY PETER KIRN

Avid today announced sweeping changes in a changing market. Having gradually accumulated more businesses, the company now is selling many of them off, keeping its flagship video tool and Pro Tools audio products. Gone are the consumer/entry-level divisions – consumer-level Avid and Pinnacle on the video side and M-Audio on the audio side.

If you can save an extra few $$ up I'd recommend the Apogee Ensemble!

IMO Apogee converters are worth the extra cash

Actually you can pick up used Ensembles now for $900-1k You really can't go wrong at that price point. Of course I have seen Fireface 800's in the same price range as well used.

In the same boat... ended up going with Metric Halo 2882 +DSP which is probably more than I was looking for, but I landed a decent deal. This is what happens when you research on the internets... :D

At a lower price point, after my research, I would have gone with ECHO Audiofire 12.

I just got a Motu Ultralite Hybrid new from Musicians Friend on sale for $470 shipped. 10 in 14 outs. Great for CV/gate synth nerds because of its 10 DC coupled outputs that can work as triggers. Works as a standalone effects mixer with comprehensive busing too.
