DSM3 Monitor Power Switch Issue

Hey folks,

I've got a pair of M-Audio DSM3 monitors which aren't covered under warranty, and aren't in production anymore. They work fine except that one of them has a slight issue with the power switch.

They use a standard two way "rocker" type switch that currently "crackles" a bit when I turn it off. If I just snap it off quick it doesn't make any noise...but if I sort of slowly rock it off it crackles a bit with an electrical sound. Any tips on what is causing this and/or how to fix it? Clearly it's some kind of short or loose wire but I'm not too savy with the electrician stuff. I can probably take the back panel off of the monitors, but I don't want to damage anything by doing so, so I was hoping to get some guidance or advice from the fine folks here.

Thanks in advance.

It's possible that the contact on the switch is not clean, and it'd probably be perfectly reasonable to leave it be. There's no feasible reason to rock the switch back and forth like that. However, if it's something you're really, really worried about, you won't damage anything just by taking the panel off and taking a look.

How about an air can?

Yeah, it's not something I'm entirely concerned about...but I just tend to be super picky about my gear. I always want it in the best possible working order ;-) Also I haven't really had them for that long...so I don't want them going bad already.

I was considering just trying to do an air can thing and see if I can't just give it a burst and see if that clears it out...I don't know.

If I were in your position...well, I kind of am because I have the same monitors. I would (and I do) just plug them into a power conditioner and leave them on all the time. If you want to shut them off, just shut them off via the switch on the power conditioner. I do this with most of my gear.

I always wondered if that was "ok" to do. I didn't know if the power conditioner would somehow be a bad way to shut the monitors off.

I've got the plugged into a power conditioner already, I just always turned them on separately.

Seems newbish to not have considered that option, I just never really thought about it...lol.

there is absolutely no problem leaving your devices always on and powering them with a power conditioner. if you are such a pussy then buy one with a surge protection.

That's what I do with my DSM1 monitors. They're on 24/7.
