Presonus DigiMax or Focusrite Octopre MkII ??? Vocals!

Hi! I am stuck. I want flexibility -the most number of preamps - and which are also good for vocals. Anybody can say of the two might be better? Or is it irrelevant?

Or should I spend on a Golden Age Pre73 for vocals? It costs almost as much as one of the above!! But only one channel!!

Thanks for your thoughts

The Digimax pres and the Octopre pres are very similar in performance. They both give a nice clean signal that can be manipulated well with EQ and effects. With those 2, flip a coin.

Thanks. I think I got it. Something like the goldenAge colors the sound much more as far as I can tell. The other two are more neutral and therefore more flexible in application. As well as having 8 channels!

On the other hand, what do you make of RFM Really Nice Preamp? I can't find many sound clips / reviews of it

I take it you mean the Digimax D8 and not the FS ?

Just looking at the panels on these two there are differences that actually could be significant, i noted the following.

1. The D8 doesnt seem to have line in just mic in and also on channel 1 and 2 instrument in, the octopre Mk2 have mic/line combo inputs and 1 and 2 also works as instrument. Not having a line input like the D8 may be a problem if you later would like to run a separate preamps analog out through the ADAT interface.

2. The D8 doesnt have ADAT in for line out from DAW (in case you would like that), it has direct out from the preamps though, the octopre has ADAT in, but doesnt have direct out (in case you would like that)

Otherwise im sure either will work fine, i dont have any of them myself, but i have the LS56 interface and am very satisfied with it, so i guess im slightly partial to the octopre and would personally choose it for the line inputs mainly even though it is more expensive than the D8.

Thanks. Yes I'd noticed those differences but thanks for pointing out in detail I really need to think how I can interface.

My main problem is still: for recording all sorts of vocals, is there really a "quality threshold" between a FMR Really Nice Pre and any of the two D8 / Octopre mentioned above?

I know (judging by the many threads) that the RNP seems to definitely have crossed this quality threshold, but what about the two strips?? :s
