Recording Chain Upgrade Help

Hey Guys,

I'm after some help here. I want to upgrade my main vocal recording chain/main recording chain in general. My current rig includes a Digidesign Digi002 and Presonus Digimax D8 for an extra 8 inputs. For mics I own an AT2020, AT2021, 2 AT3031's, 3 SM57's, Beta 52A and Audix I5.

I'm looking into buying a new preamp and vocal mic. For the Preamp I've been considering either the Golden Age Pre73 or the Alctron MP100 (re-branded Universal Audio 710). Both are around the same price $350.

For the microphone i really have no idea what to get, so many people recommend the ShureSM7B but I am unsure whether I want a dynamic or condenser.

I would like help mainly on the mic choice. I want a mic I can use on a variety of vocals both male and female and can also be used to record acoustic guitar. I'm happy for either a tube mic or normal condenser type as well.

My price range for preamp suggestions would be some where in the $300-$500 mark, possibly a bit more if dual channel pres are advised. And for the microphone, somewhere around $500.

Please also take note that I live in Australia and so things are more expensive here, though I am more then happy to buy from America.

If you need any other information please just ask.

Any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks guys!

Kristian.

Thanks for the suggestions, I was actually considering some of them, though the KSM44 seems to be closer to $1000 not the $550 you mentioned, unless you were talking about second hand?

I will defiantly look into them all though.

Thank you

yea, a quick ebay search shows used KSM44's for about 500 and a ksm44A for 1000. bought mine in 2009 and actually didnt know about the 44A...

FWIW: the more i upgraded, the more i noticed my gear revealing the room i was in. currently building some DIY gobos for recording...the people are never wrong: acoustic treatment

Didn't even realise there were different models.

I have been thinking of treatment, only problem is I am doing a lot of location recording so its not always in ideal rooms. But I have been thinking of getting a portable vocal booth to help.

Any idea how the KSM44 compares to the cheaper KSM32?

ZED14 for the pre's. Super nice pre's really and you get a grip (6) for only $400 US

An EV N/D767 for male/female vox

Use the leftover cash for a nice comp like RNLA

Guess I should have said it first off, I need my pres to be portable as I move my rig around a lot. Also also don't have the room at home to keep even a small mixing desk.

But I will definitely look into the EV mic suggested.

Can anyone offer any insight into the AT 40XX range of mics? Like the 4033/4040/4047?

Thanks.

All the 40 series mics are fantastic, it just depends on your preference of taste. The 4033 IMO is just a quality, neutral mic. The 4050 has its own signature sound and the 4047 is darker and (dare I say) intimate.

For me though I don't care to sing into any of them, but they're fantastic instrument mics. That's just me though.

Look at the frequency response graphs. Listen to audio at the ZenproAudio.com website with their "clipalator" interface.

Great thanks!! I think I'm leaning to these mics as their prices seem to be pretty good and they all get great reviews. Though mixed in regards to vocals. I'm sure pairing them with the right preamp will also help though.
