The AES/Spdif output version does support 96kHz however...

[quote=ricknaqvi]We have a new preamp being released this month that does both A/D and D/A and uses SMUX to do up to 96kHz.

hey Rick-

i've used your 8-channel mic pres several times...nice. one question though. why
put the xlr connectors on the front? i guess you ran out of room on the
back with all the other I/O connectors, but to be honest, it gets clunky
in a rack to have all those snaked inputs hanging down the front
of the gear. then again, it will make swapping out inputs quicker...

not a deal-breaker...just wondering.

thanks,
marty.

Getting harder to find than hen's teeth nowadays, but they show up now and again.

Can't comment on the other stuff, but the Ramsa is in my remote rack, and I often forget how good they sound till I play the sessions back - they really do sound great, and work flawlessly.

YMMV,
i know this is an old post but someone just gave me one of these Ramsa units, i was wondering how i can hook it up to the digi 002? Do i need to get an ADAT to lightpipe coverter?

ADAT is lightpipe. All you need is a toslink cable out of the Ramsa into the 002. Make sure the input on the 002 is set for ADAT, not SPDIF.

Congrats on the Ramsa. We have two and are always on the lookout for more. Great units, and solid as a tank!

Crane Song Spider

if you do a search there are several threads that go into the many options between the $8k spider & the $200 ada8000.

Nice.

Is it the converter only, or with mic pre's (WZ-AD96M)?

Zero sex appeal with these babies. I love mine. As the others said, hook it up via the output from the WZ/AD96 to the 002's lightpipe input. I'd also suggest using it as master, and setup PT to accept ADAT in as clock master.

Even years later, listening to new converters designs etc. these units still never fail to impress me.

If your dad has any more spares kickin around I'll pay for shipping!!!

Good luck and happy recording.

Think Steve Flowers from Audient posted on this board previously that a new version of the ASP008 will include S/MUX support via ADAT. Unfortunately, older units will not be upgradeable since the layout of the back panels are different.

Same here (with the DA7 dinosaur!!!) but it gets used to quite a lesser extent than the Ramsa rack units.

If you care to hear anything recorded thru the WZ-AD96M's into a 002R flip me an email - I'm just rendering down a jazz demo tracked 2 days ago...

regards,

Presonus Firestation as Analog to ADAT converter?

If you want 8 channels of pretty good and damned cheap, I'd look into a Yamaha MLA8. Considerably more headroom than the Mackie Onyx, though I think those sound good, too. Didn't care for the Focusrite Octopre, though it worked. Most of these products only have the AD, not the DA.

If you really need 96K, that's a whole other discussion, and it probably ends with you getting a second interface. Metric-Halo 2882 is a popular solution and an excellent value. I owned a Focusrite ISA 428 and liked it fine. Sold it reluctantly and may own one again someday. But there is no good reason to own two of them.

Do you mean to say that I can use the Presonus Firestation as an Analog to ADAT converter? So I could use any analog 8ch mic pre, like a Millenia HV-3D, and use the FIREStation to convert it to ADAT - in order to use my 002 on remote 16ch sessions? Or would I be better off getting something like an Aphex8 CH ANALOG to ADAT CONVERTER for $399? Or?

I basically want to use the 002 ADAT in order to add 8ch to my rig, but I want a QUALITY preamp.

Yes, you could do that.

I'm not familiar with the Aphex, but when I did my own research on this maybe 18 months ago, I determined that the Firestation was as good or better than any 8-channel AD/DA that you could find for under $800, possibly much more. Which is not that surprising, considering it originally sold for $1000.

Well, the Firestation's built-in preamps are nice "cheap" preamps, very usable, but would I call them "quality" preamps? Such a vague term, but probably not. I believe they are pretty comparable to the MP20.

That said, you don't have to use the built-in preamps at all, you can just use it as a straight AD/DA converter, and the mic preamp circuits are totally out of the signal path.

Considering this is the "Low End " forum I would say the Firestudios Pres are great. Actually the Behringer ADA8000 is the only (B) piece I have used that I liked. It was quite functional for the money. Of course this has been said in many threads already. I will say that I liked the Onyx Pres and that the Onyx 1200F is awful interesting with 12 onyx pres. Check it out.

Not sure about 'best', but Presonus Digimax FS have decent converters and pres (for the price, of course). Digimax FS also have 8 preamps, two instrument inputs 6 line ins, 8 line outs (straight after preamps), direct channel outs (you will get 8 analog outs from daw), and insert points on every channel. Ah, yesss...and adat ins and outs - 16@48khz, 8@96.
