Which CAPI pre for acoustic guitar

G'Day All,

I've got a Question regarding a CAPI pre for acoustic guitar recording (folky stuff mainly). I've recently built a VP26 and am kind of liking the sound I'm getting with single mic recording.

I've been running either a Beyer mc930 or Octava MK012 through it and although I like the dry sound it has (an early Bob Dylan feel to me), there is a bit of colour going on, which when strumming, seems to smear the top end only. The lows and mids are solid. I am not pushing the input much either.

Is there a CAPI pre that is a bit cleaner or smoother in the top end? I do like the sound in general and it was fun to build and cheap too.

Thanks

I'm using vp26 red dots on acoustic at the moment, and I know what you are saying. I think there is more of a vanilla flavor available, maybe spycho monkey or dr bill can offer some more insight, if they come across this thread.

It sounds like the vp312 is what you're after.
I own a pair of both the vp25 and vp312. My 312's are very open in the top end compared to the vp25's. for example cymbals sound dramatically different through the vp25's... very smooth and they don't seem to jump out like they do when using the vp312's.

There's a huge thread called "is the vp26 right for me" or something like that and from memory it has sound samples comparing the vp26 and the vp312.

Do they have 500 series?

I know what sound I'm looking for and VP26 is close. Both my mics are great and I know them well as they have smooth top ends with no harshness. For me the mc930 is preferable for fingerstyle and the MK012 is nice for strumming.

Thanks. I went through that thread before getting the VP26. For some reason I chose the VP26 as my first build. Maybe 'coz the buzz was all around that one. I might just get the 312 and see how it goes.

the quad eight kits are not 500 series compatible.

i'm not saying the vp312 is not what you are looking for, it may well be. i'm just throwing out some alternatives.

from what you've descibed you are wanting makes me think quad eight or a designs. ie. like an api but open.

the p1 is 500 series but not a kit.

Thanks. I have thought about the P1 as well. I listened to scumbums VP26 and VP312 acoustic samples and could tell a slight difference. They both sound similar to what I hear from my own recordings. His room sounds better than mine though.

We have both vp26's and p1's, the p1's have become pretty much my go-to pre's for overheads and acoustic guitar. They just seem to tame the transients and give an easier sound. I have been interested in orphan audio's kits, but I thought that they weren't based on the same design as the p1?

i'm pretty sure they are all different but in the same ball park.

adesign pacifica is a quad eight variation, p1 is meant to be a sort of 500 version to a larger extent.
the ventura from my understanding is a quad eight type preamp and eq in a 1ru.

i guess but haven't heard the electrodynes are also in the same zone. there is a crossover of opamp and transformer design but still no unit will be exactly the same.

I suggest the VP26 with GAR2520. Great body yet lots of clarity (reminded me of the Forssell pre but with mojo, which is a huge compliment imo).
