@Sonic Dogg, as of now, I am using an AKG C214. I'll get something more high-end before I get the preamp, probably. If not, very soon after. I am not talking about hiss from the mic, as I am satisfied with the floor noise of my current set up. I'm basing this off what I've seen/heard/read about people talking about this ever so "pleasant" hiss. Don't get me wrong, I like coloration, I just cannot stand that hiss... I've included a file to kind of show what I'm talking about (a more hyperbolic demo, just to make sure you can hear). In digression, my options I've set forth are so that I don't get something mid-range, and replace soon after. I want to get something that is going to last, hold its value, and be a versatile unit, overall.

@Jim, hopefully the argument can last forever!

@Quadrafunk, that looks real quiet! Thank you so much for posting that! When at those volume levels, it is at a usable volume level, right?

@Newton, I believe I can often do that (to an extent) with that I have now. I, of course (like many others), am learning new stuff everyday that enhance my sound further. I'd like to take the plunge into the subject of this thread, so that acquiring said sound, will be a much easier task, and increase my sonic palette. Yes, I do know I can turn it off, as I'm not completely clueless. That said, I do that, for the most part. I find that that the hiss emulation is more exaggerated in plug-ins than their hardware counterparts.

I'd like to thank you all so much for your responses. All of it is extremely helpful, and consoles my mind much more than I could on my own, for purchases!

Mark

Yes those are the normal positions I work at. Input around 10 o'clock, output at unity (12 o'clock of course). Most often I keep the output at unity and adjust the input depending on the source.

Thanks, again! Do you normally use the hardware's EQ, or just do that in your DAW?

A little bit of both. I track with a little bit of eq and have inserts set up in Cubase if I need to bring something back out during mixing.

I rarely need to bring anything back out after tracking.

I have a feeling I'd be to scared to use the EQ too often, in fear of messing up, entailing a rerecord. Plus the laziness of I/O'ing.

It's a great learning tool for me. Lot's of f' ups but I'm getting a lot better. The Alpha Channel really forces you to use your ears because it only shows the numerical value for the high and low freq on each band.

With my X-Desk, I/O is a breeze. I have both Alpha Channels patched in and can track through them or insert them on a mix channel with one button push.
