Beatles Hey Bulldog Mic

what mic are they using in this video? and how did they sing like that...

The Beatles - Hey Bulldog 1080p [HD] - YouTube

i have to just say this song as well as many other beatles songs are an anomaly or a phenomenon of music somehow. The sound is so natural. there's a commonality that touches everyone. at least me...anyway yeah what mic is it? cool pop filter.

Seriously, it stands for "automatic double tracking".

I've also heard:
AutoMATED double tracking...and

artificial double tracking as well

Ken Townshend @ Abbey Road came up with it to simplify the tedious process of doubling vocal tracks.

Involves a 20-50ms delay, a VCO at a freq around 1 hz or under, with a depth of 40% or so, and usually no feedback.

Mix to taste w/ original signal, usually the dry out front.

Much more difficult in those days than with DAWs today, but theirs sounded about a million times better.

I still like real doubles myself, the ADT was a big part of at least Lennon's sound.

peace,
john

This ihas become one of my fave Beatles songs and actually I haven't really heard it till about 2 years ago or so.

Priceless footage of the setup they used at Abbey Road!

Most all of Abbey Roads' vocal mics for the Beatles were U48's although they also had several original U47's converted to fig. of 8 pattern so there were some long body U47's with a Beatle on each side of em. The mic in the vid is a U48.

I didn't look at the clip, but the Beatles often used the U-48, which is a figure of 8 mic, allowing the singers to sing facing each other.
