The CAD E100s - your opinion or experience with ??

V.O. guy with a lot of mics - once upon a time a CAD E200 - good fit for my voice but noisy and sold it. Just 'rediscovered' the CAD E100s in some reviews...

I need good mid-range presence and all the usual elements of a cut-through boost at appropriate frequency(s) for mostly Broadcast Post end-use - spots, narration...etc.

This mic from what i've listened to is interesting... I have actually been considering a Kel HM7u in comparison... I want to equip a second booth with something that'll work well with minimal post-EQ - running a pretty clean Amek 9098 pre.. Got a Rode NT2A there now - dealing with less than ideal room/acoustics - very small dimensions and quite dead but some occasional HVAC venting in the adjacent control rm area that we can only try and isolate/filter with some processing...

Main studio, I use a Peluso 2247LE and G.River Combo alot...alternately, have a 103, 416 that i sometimes combo with a UA 610-mkII or Fearn...
Other mics on the shelf - an MK219 Joly mod., TLM 67 - (not a 'bright' sounding VO mic to my ear...) and old MXL v67 that i've considered modding... and a bunch of high-end dynamics...but i prefer LDC's for VO as they're a little more forgiving for me anyway -

I run stuff with a little limiting and light compression to a Finalizer>Mac>Bias Peak using an Apogee Duet2/ and Apogee FW Duet (still like a FW A/D over the USB but thats another topic).

ANYway, happy to hear any thoughts on the E100s and if/how it might be any improvement over any of the mics i've hoarded for the past 25 yrs ; ) No sense buying mic unless it's a unique flavor i don't already have... I'd A/B one with the 2247LE but don't have a local dealer to borrow one from....

Thanks for your time!

I'm about the furthest thing from a professional and have used maybe 3 mics, so I'll say it's teh best mic ever! (typical inexperienced review)

In all seriousness, I'm really not a professional and I have only used a handful of mics and this one just a handful of times (mostly because I don't have time and haven't even messed with tracks I did back in March). The noise floor really is shockingly low, the mic really hates super close up vocals and will react violently to wind/puffs (my solution was a blast pad), the proximity effect super up close isn't that spectacular from what I could tell at the time. Otherwise, normal conditions it sounds fairly neutral. Maybe would be a good reference point, or good for quiet quiet mic'ing applications due to its self noise.

As far as the tone, I really couldn't tell you. It reproduces sound pretty well to my ears, there's some acoustic clips floating around if you search around that make it sound NICE, and it's on the clipalator as well, so that'd probably do better for you to judge its tone than any sort of adjective assembly I would pull out of my ass.

I own one, but it's been on loan to a friend and, with a 2 year old to watch, I haven't had much time to get to know it.

Seemed pretty clean and super quiet - but you know how it is with voices and mics....

I have one and really love it. It does have a sweet spot and needs a bit of room to work (you don't need to get too close).

Here is a review by a pro VO guy.

As a previous and long time owner of the CAD E-200 ( and used the E-100 quite often), I think the E-100 was a fuller sounding mic. Probably due to capsule sizes..At first glance, one would be " fooled" ( I was...) that the E-200 was a LDC, but it's not.. It has an 1/2" dia. capsule tucked inside. As the E-100 has an 1" dia. That said, the E-200 is a good sounding, workhorse of a mic though..Good luck

E-200 is a dual electret condenser. I've been looking at the E100s for a while, but with 200's, 350's and a VSM, it's hard to justify at this point.
