which converters?

hey there,

i'm looking for new converters/interface.
running a focusrite spahire pro 40 at the moment which sounds okay
but i need more (and better) ins & outs for OTB mixing /tracking.
my needs are:
-24 out / at least 16 in.
-no mic pres or 48V, line level only
-pci + box would be okay
-48khz/24bit is fine for me
-budget is around 1400-1500 euro

i read alot here in the forums and it seemed to be that the motu 24 i/o
does not have better converters and some people have issues with the internal clock. the option of a pair of echo audiofire 12 sounded okay for the price but i'm wondering if they are much better than the focusrites? maybe the profire lightbridge with ferrofish 16mkII and some used 8 ch adc?

i didnt hear many good mid-priced ones till now but the ones on my emu1212 pci do sound very open and good for me and quite better as the focusrites..this "quality level" would be absolutley ok for me! if you know them you could guess what im looking for quality wise.

hope some of you guys could help me!

sorry for my bad english hope it makes sense to you

thanks in advance!

merlin

What's wrong with the Saffire?

Are you using your ADAT functionality? Could always pipe a multi-channel pre -- then another pre (or two) through SPDIF.

hey,
thanks for the reply.

i thought of it but the idea to get 1 or 2 additional ad/da with 8 channels isnt worthwhile for me. because to me the conversion of the saphire "okay" but not that good and i would have to spend at least 1200 euro for the 2 extra devices an does not have better conversion though..

I don't own a Saffire yet, but I've been digging quite a bit on GS about it. I'm not sure you're gonna find much better in the price range (given the need for as many inputs).

(This question's for everyone) I'm probably completely wrong with this, but say you bought a Focusrite ISA one digital and used SPDIF to connect, could you then clock from the ISA?

You could then add a really nice pre, to go along with the 8 Saffire channels and 8 ADAT channels

please dont get me wrong but i dont wanna keep the saffire.
the alphalink + madiextreme card is above my budget & i dont know if the motu
would be the right decision.
i'm searching for a solution between those and/or experiences with..

You're gonna struggle to get 24out at the same quality as the Focusrite for that price. Used lynx with USB would be good for 16 io. Motu would be a step down.

2 Audiofire 12's would be the cheapest way.

I heartily recommend the Pro 40, just make sure your firewire host controller is Texas Instruments. It's a great unit!

Honest I would through a dartboard into a map of manufacturers and pick one.. Sorry not to be too helpful on this one, but I must of had or used nearly every level prosumer interface at some point.. Seriously.. There wasn't a great wacking difference between the lot of them..

Echo audio fire 8 / 12, great specs on paper had one sounds great *And cheap*
Saffire / TC on the lower side of the specs sheet but still good.
MBOX <--- Same as the above.
Then list goes on.. until you get to around $1000 - 3000 where you have prism and metric halo LIO and upper side RME's..
