Monitor power consumption?

I have a pair of the new M-Audio BX5 monitors, after purchasing them, it really made me wonder about something. These are about 70w per speaker, I have my audio interface mixer set to max volume, Windows volume set to 80% and my monitors at a very low gain. They are quite loud at this setting, more than loud enough to accomodate my room.
However, the thing I was wondering about was, how much power do they actually consume. Such as, if no sound is being produced from them, are they consuming much power?
Also, would it consume more power if I had my monitors set to an even lower gain and Windows set higher. Or would it be the same power consumption regardless of how it was set up and it being entirely dependant on the level of sound being produced?

I'm just curious about efficiency these days, not sure why, but I'm sure it will treat me well over time...
But if anyone could shed some light on this then that'd be great! :D

Thanks
~Chris L

The back of the amp will have a wattage use rating on it. All electronics that are On use power even at idle. Pushing your amps to make them louder will cause them to use more power. Why is this an issue for you?

For what it's worth, I have the same monitors but I choose to power them off when I'm not using them: saves hydro and also prevents pops when/if machine goes down.

But the thing I don't understand is...
Will power consumption in the monitors differ if I bump up the output level from my soundcard, or if I leave the soundcard output alone and bump up the monitor level instead?

One thing I've been wondering is whether it's safe to switch the monitors off straight at the mains or whether it's best to stick to using the rocker switch on the back of the monitors?
I'd prefer to just be able to flick them both off with one easy move rather than having to reach over to turn them off...
They always used to do it back at my college, but I'm just curious whether it could be harmful in any way, shape or form to my monitors?

You're worrying about the wrong thing. Worry about making more money so you don't have to worry about the power consumption of two measly speakers.

to begin with, you need to understand gain structure.
Then if there is a power consumption difference in the situation you describe, you can track it with a clamp on meter or one of the plug in KillaWatt type meters. Then you'll KNOW the difference.
