Ah I see, that's Dutch. Mics it is then.

Carry on.

this comparison is more flawed than most tests because the vocals sound doubled.

These are some pretty interesting clips. The CM5 seems like a really solid mic right off the bat, but the modded cm6, while it sounds weird in the first example, sounds just about perfect on 'fixit'. I'd definitely be interested to hear any other work you do with it daanh to get a sort of averaged out sense of what it really sounds like in context.

Since you also solicited thoughts on the mix on 'fixit', I gotta say (listening on earbuds) that there were aspects I liked and others I didn't. The drum and bass and guitar part doubling the bass part all sound really good to me. I think the playing in the first few bars could use a bit of tightening. There is something about the sound of the banjo that I didn't really like, like it was close mic'd in a way that made the sound a bit painful. It might have been the way it was compressed or the mic placement, I'm not sure. The dut dut duts I think would sound better if they were recorded a bit further off the mic, or maybe mixed with less compression and more ambience. The crazy stuttering mix compression that becomes noticeable when the lead vocals come in is really cool, but also not quite where I think it would be best. It's all a bit claustrophobic, so maybe backing off some of the mix elements would help with that, maybe making the compression ratio or threshold a bit more reasonable. That said, the crazy compression sounds perfect on the instrumental part around 2:00, so I guess if you could ease up on the extent to which it affects the vocals that might be ideal.

Cool track! Hope I haven't said anything offensive, just offering some personal thoughts.

Due to popular demand, here's another song done with the modded CM6. I'm waiting for a new Cinemag transformer to arrive, to mod it even more, but so far I'm really happy with the sound. The songs title means "point at it".

Just a reminder, you know you have to do other subtle adjustments when using the new transformer, right?

You can't just rip out the old one, slap the new one in, and call it done.

I'm not qualified in that area, but I do know when you change out the transformer you need to adjust the mic in other ways. Basically, your mic was designed to function well with the transformer that's in there now. When you change it out, it needs to be optimized for the change in hardware. There are a couple of smart mic modifiers on this forum that are very experienced in that regard. You may want to ask their expert opinion on that.

Just trying to be a help/give you a heads up if you're going that route. Personally, I like my the stock transformer in the CM-6 but best of luck on your upgrade!

Ok, I slapped a Cinemag transformer in my modded CM6. I had some moisture problems so I had to let it on for a full day. I think it's fine now. Lemme know what you think:

...if you're referring to the CM-6 with the Lundahl tranny I was testing, I'd have to say that the transformer swap did not make a big difference from the stock CM-6...it seemed similar enough that I actually did some vocal "punch-ins" on a track I had previously recorded with a stock CM-6, and it blended perfectly well...so IMHO, while there may be a slight voicing change that might benefit on a particular application, I didn't find the differential, at least in my limited use, worthy of the additional cost...it seems clear that a capsule swap (like the K47 swap posted here) makes a greater difference from the stock configuration...

...I haven't yet had a chance to compare the files from the post above...

...on another note, for those looking for a deal on a new CM-6 or CM-5, check out the $375 "Oktoberfest Special" on the Stellar website:
