Sampling / Field Recording

When you guys do sampling for later inclusion in a DAW (like say to put in the EXS24 or what have you), is there something you look out for for trying to get the samples tracked evenly? Or is this really a case where with levels and EQ you can actually "fix it in the mix?" I'd mostly be using odd things for extra percussive sounds, pads, stretching out for granular synthesis, etc. Not "main" parts of the song, but I still want things to cohere reasonably well.

Any tips/tricks to do that? I'm looking to get a simple field recorder with the X/Y stereo mic pair and record things at 24/96kHz.

Finally, would you shoot for the same levels when sampling as with general tracking? (I keep things at the master fader at -14db to -12db average with maybe -7 to -6db peaks).

You're doing alright by me. When recording in the field make sure S to N ratio is the best without overloading anything in the signal chain.

+1, Try and get the best quality recording you can and match levels etc. once you get back to the DAW.
