Akai samples onto a Mac formatted disk

Hi,

I've got lots of Akai samples stored on double sided optical disks. The optical disk drive is the old SCSI (big connector) which hooked up to an S3000. In recent times I'm getting tired of having to squint at the blurred LCD of the Akai and I'd love to get those samples off those optical disks so I can possibly use them with Mach 5.

Problem is, I cannot get any Mac to see the optical drive (Sony). Has anyone managed to do something like this? Any advice much appreciated.

I always used to use zip disks with my AKAIs

So when it came to transfering my zip disks to the Mac I bought a usb zip drive and then used Cdxtract to convert the samples amd programs to halion format.

Thanks for that redroom. I wonder if there's any such thing as a USB Magneto Optical drive?
Slightly off topic but how did your Akai programs sound when you imported them to your new sampler?

can you get hold of an S5000/6000? rent, borrow, steal... you could load your 3000 samples into the 6k and usb that to your mac...

there used to be a program called "akai interpreter" which would read akai cdroms... dunno it's status now.

digital performer had a lot of akai stuff built into it.. dunno if it still does.

The problem seems to be to get the optical drive to mount ... I've tried it on a G3 and at the moment I'm waiting for a mate to return an old lc475 that I gave away some time ago.

3rd World Order: Thanks, that's an idea. I can get my hands on an S6000. Does it have USB or firwire?

decked out 6000s have USB.. its an add on card tho.. look for an "s6000 studio"

you'll need the akai "ak.sys" app to talk to them... it's free.
