Iranian/Persian instrument samples..?

I'm looking for samples from Persian instruments,
like Setar, Daf, Tar, Kamanc, Tombak, Santur etcetc.

It's somehow difficult to find good stuff of these.

I know the library Campbell's Origins has few, but that seems about it.

Anyone knows of another site/ title with persian instruments samples?

Much obliged!

It is in fact VERY difficult, to find good samples for Oriental Stuff...

Most Libraries I checked had lots of phrases and "ready to go" styles, but that's not something I'm looking for, so I cannot recommend anything to look for, sorry!

Since Tuning is crucial, I cannot imagine a (workeable) collection of those instruments, I usually go with musicians.

What I _can_ recommend is the "Darbuka" virtual Percussion Ensemble by Wizoo??

Good luck on your search, and please post if you dig something useful for you on your quest

It might be worth to look for .sf2 and .gig - files on the net....

Cheers, Niko

funkynuts - do you own "silk road"? i was thinking about buying but it looked more like loops than actual instruments. seemed a bit sketch for the price without being able to try. i'd rather just sample vinyl and cd's for way cheaper.

Yes, I was indeed thinking someone might have posted some simple patches somewhere.. I'll post it if I find something.

It is indeed disappointing, most tuned instruments are "authentically" tuned when looped, but seperate samples suddenly go western tuning on you!

I wouldn't even mind having a lot of phrases and loops, but they also are very scarce.
And the seperate samples are terrible, who is interested in western tuned persian instruments anyway!!?

Silk road, although cool now & then, has the exact problems stated above.

Plus; barely any samples!

turkisch & arabian instruments are easier to find, like the darbuka etc. there's more of those on Silk Road I believe

swarshala has decent daff, darabouka/doumbek, and finger cymbal samples, as well as a whole slew of pretty solid indian stuff--the dholki and pakhwaj samples are especially good. the string samples are simple but OK; the winds are horrible.

Way cool! Speak 2 you soon!

Anyone else may still comment of course if you know something.

I already tried looking for some free stuffs (soundfonts etc), I found several cool things but noone of them Persian ;-)
So I think the net is ruled out on this one.

I am Persian, I live in NYC and I play dombak and Daf. I also have a very nice santur. What kind of samples are you looking for exactly. Maybe I can pull something up for you.
Alternatively, if you're in the area, we can work something out at my studio and do a sample cd for exactly what you need.

PM me and we can talk.

Sasha

My father is a professional musician (persian) and plays all of those instruments. If you need anything done from my end, let me know.

i defintly backup the DARBUKA recomendation. is defintly the best.

also, ethnic worl from ZeroG

dont get orient world or silk roads those suck.

swarplug is really good but some samples are more for indian stuff.

i met a dude that makes pro iranian music in australia ("which is interesting")

he had a korg keyboard i never seened before. it was geard for the arabic/persian styles music. so it was loaded with cool patterns of rythms i couldnd even pronounce and where awsome. he also loaded samples catriges also.
other things included a fast acces to samplekey tunning , so he could tune down a quarter of the mayor seventh of the scale he was playing at the moment to give that distint middle eastern sound.
of course when i tried to sample the rythms and multipatches my PC machine didnt want to work. damn
i totally forgot the model but didnt find it in the korg website.
the casing of the keyboard said something like middle eastern module or kyboard.
well i still like darbuka from Wizoo.

i have every ethnic library out there and i think its true, there should be more. and better!.

samples dont' cut it IMO. If you've got a good chain then a good musician will give you the best results.

if you don't end up going down the live muso route, check out the group buy on Quantum Leap's 'RA' (soundsonline.com, I think)

This is a NI Kontakt Player based sample replay sound set, with a lot of Middle Eastern sounds, in addition to the shedload of stuff from around the globe. It's half price until 30th June.

I just picked up a copy, but it's too early days to give a thumbs up or down. I can say it 'sounds' great - well engineered (at Ocean Way, apparently) and fairly comprehensive. A mix of some 'ready-to-go' phrases and a huge number of multi samples
