There was a really good article in Tape Op #90 (pages 22-32) titled "Less is More", about classical recording. It was about Bob Fine (written by his son Thomas) and seemed to focus on placement. The scope was about the transition from mono to three omnis mixed to stereo. The mics used were U47's, KM56's, Altec 639, and Schoeps M201's. Due to current value and availability, these are not realistic suggestions, but consider getting 1 extremely nice mic and pre and meticulously work on placement. Possibly 2 and do M/S or blumlein. Anyway, I think to some degree less is more.

If the parts are rehearsed, and the orchestra is balanced, this can yield excellent, timeless results.

Good luck! Post decisions and recordings too!

Great advice and can be had for a bargain, used. I saw a pair go for $350 in the classifieds some time back.

I'll give another +++ for a Shure KSM series mic. They are rugged, and will sound good on almost any source. If you can swing a KSM44, you'll have a fine, tough, versitile mic.

If sm57's are part of the mix, I would recommend the "gizmo" mod from recording magazine. Its cheap and it works. Signal loss is a lot less than the tape-op mod, maybe 3-4 db. For spot micing this will result in a much more pleasant top-end, especially on bright sources. - Shure SM57 Impedance Modification : Recording Magazine -.

For 1k this is a MONSTER workhorse for anything from close intimate bow work to brass to incredible vocals. I have a lot of different mics that I run through my Avalon 737 in to my Apogee Rosetta and throwing the BLUE in front of anyone has always inspired the performer and I think that's what it's all about at the end of the day...

and then the other suggestions are awesome to add on, great people out there. I'd think about what you're going to be doing most and focus on that and then add on.

Hope that helps
