Monitors under $100 for pop/rock/indie

And I don't mind buying used.

I'm a total monitor noob. What's good in this price range?

Can I actually find something decent for that kind of cash?

Not really. Maybe something used. The original Alesis Monitor Ones can be found for about $100 but you'll still need a power amp. Bump your budget up to $300 or so and you'll open up a lot of possibilities.

I'm using the passive Tannoy Reveal 601p monitors with an Altec Lansing power amp. At $125 per speaker they are a steal. I like them. They are very "revealing". Sorry for the pun! The actives are about $450 a pair though.

I already have a power amp. Should have mentioned.

Also, I have some DT770 pro headphones to supplement whatever I get.

Oh, well then I can fully recommend the Tannoy 601p passives. They are $250 for a pair though. I've also used those original Alesis Monitor Ones a lot. They aren't near as good as the Tannoys (they have some masking in the midrange) but you can for sure do mixes on them. They sell SUPER cheap. I'm sure you can find a pair for $100 with some patience.

I'd say go for the Tannoys. You can definitely learn how to mix on those (will take some time, make lots of comparative listening - eg headphones, car, boombox, high end stuff etc.) Just so you can get a feel on how they translate.

I had the Alesis Monitor Ones years ago and while they were very liked for electronic music they did burn through tweeters like nothing else. (I've long sold them but still found 3 spare tweeters the other day ...).
