What's the proper way to DI bass guitar with this gear?

Hey folks,

So I'm looking to record bass guitar for my band and I'd like to record the DI as well as the bass cab. I want to have a blend of the two tones. I'm not 100% if that I know how to do it correctly and I don't want to damage any gear.

I have a GAP 73 Preamp for DI and an Ampeg SVT Classic. My interface is an ART Tubefire.

Thanks a million!

bass to direct box, direct box thru to amp input, mic the cab to ch 1 on interface.

XLR out of DI box to pre amp>XLR to TRS into interface in on ch 2.

I don't think there is a 'thru' output on the GAP73. It just has one output labeled 'output'. Won't the output from the GAP73 be too hot for the Ampeg input?

The GAP is your preamp. You should pick up a separate DI box to put in front of it. You'll also need a 2nd preamp. i.e. one for the direct signal, and another for the mic'd amp.

Do some google searches on what a direct injection box is, what it does and you will be able to read for a month.

If you want to record the bass cab, stick a mic in front of it.

Run your bass cord into a DI, go from the DI to the amp and the XLR output of the DI to your interface. .

You might have to adjust for delay between the two signals since the mic will be slightly behind the DI signal.

I've gotten decent results by plugging my bass straight into my Gap, then sending the 1/4" output of the Gap to my amp and the xlr out to my interface. Then I mic'd the amp as per usual and time aligned the tracks.
