Considering that most interfaces HAVE preamps, and that the preamps in these interfaces have been discussed several times at least for the popular and current models, I find it difficult to believe that the only thread you found pertinent to your question was 3 years old.

If you are on a mac and need only 2 channels I'd say go for the MH ULN2.
