Borrowing GAP Pre73 & Comp 54

Umm... I know I'm gonna sound daft but, ehhhh what's the signal chain for these puppies into my MBox Pro?

Pre73 out into the Comp 54 into the front of the MBox Pro or use a insert on the back of the MBox Pro?

Also we have two of each on loan, can we send a stereo mix out to these and back into the MBox Pro for some vintage colour?

there's also a 600ohm switch thingy on the back - any use?

I can hear you all now... bloody bird!

600 ohm switch - treat it just as a "colour" switch - for some mics, it makes a massive difference, on others not do much. I assume you're talking about the GAP73 - never heard of a compressor having variable impedance...

Simplest way is pre73-comp-line in on mbox. If there's an analogue insert point on the mbox (ie post preamp, pre converter) go into the insert return - this will bypass the preamp on that channel.

Which mbox do you have? To do a "hardware insert" you will need an interface with at least 4 outputs and a stereo input - you need to have a stereo pair to monitor through (ie your main outputs) plus a stereo pair of io to do a send/return for the processing chain. Have a read of the pt manual regarding "hardware insert", that should explain how you need to set it up better thn a forum post can!

If the comp 54 pair can't be stereo linked, be wary using them to process a stereo mix. Anything other than gentle compression will cause the stereo picture to "wobble", eg if there's a big cymbal crash on one side only.

This is where some bright pops up to tell you how to use unlinked compressors to process a stereo signal using mid/side techniques, but hey, walk before we run, right?! Get to this point, then once it's working, we can worry about that. At any rate, just running through the gap73s will make a difference.

Bloody bird? Hah you really are a Brit......to be honest, this is far from the daftest question I've ever seen on here.....!

Yes, very possible.

You can either go into the line inputs (just use a balanced TRS jack to female XLR) or into the insert points (the inserts are unbalanced, so whilst it's possible to find the right leads and bypass the onboard preamps totally, I'd just leave them at unity gain and run into the line inputs - especially if you only have the pre+comp for a weekend).

Regarding processing a full mix, connect output of 3/4 to line input of pre 73s (I do this with a pre 73 too - I tend to set line gain to -20, output to give me unity gain through the chain. you could possibly go into the mic input instead for more colour, but watch the level!). Outputs of pre73s to compressor, compressor to line IN 3/4.

In pro tools, on the track you're using the insert on, instead of inserting a plugin, choose "io", then "3/4". make sure delay compensation is ON. that should be it.

Personally, if I had 2 mono compressors available, I'd probably use them on Lead vox and bass rather than over the entire mix.

You could always use the compressors for vox/bass/whatever, print these by recording them to a new track, then reusing the inserts with the pre73s for mix colour.

Good luck!

it works! it works!

ok so this guy wants $1500 for all 4 of them (2 Comp 54's and 2 GAP 73's).

slightly dinged and dusty, but doesn't that add tone?

Are they modded? If not, that's more than they would cost new!

Ok, if that's true then it's a good deal.
