Thread Starter | Low Budget OH Mic Shootout: NT1A, AT4040, ECM-87
So here is a shootout I did with Rode NT1As, Audio Technica AT4040s, and Gauge ECM-87s. If you aren't familiar with the Gauge mics, check out their website. Be aware: I'm not a drummer and don't claim to be! ![]() All of the mics were a spaced pair going through a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 into Logic. You'll probably have to right-click and save the link as in order to play them. OH #1 OH #2 OH #3 I'll post the results after we get a few opinions! |

I'm guessing #2 is the NT1A (listened to all 3 thru iPhone speaker) |

I'm sorry to say that I like them all for different reasons. I guess it depends on what kind of vibe you're going for with the rest of the track. Number two is, to my ears, much more forward and in your face. Number three is a bit warmer, less crunchy. Number one sound like it's picking up a full range of frequencies top to bottom. Which do I like the best? I think number three because it sounds more old school. Consider that I'm really a musician and not an engineer.

Number two is the nt1a? I own the rode and number two sounded pretty close from just a quick (headphone) listen. Interested to see the results though
