16ch audio inteface

i need a 16in possibly 16out audio inteface to use with my 16ch soundcraft spirit, i don't really need any pre's because i'm going to use the spirit for that,
i don't mind getting a 8in 8out and just add a behringer ada8000 it also doesnt have to be brand new either you guys have any sugestions?
i kinda want a 1 rack unit but then again it doesn't matter i just want something thats functional for recording synths and mostly electronic music.

thx
Neb

Hi,
I'd go for a Motu (828 or Traveller) or maybe a used Fireface 400. These you can extend with the ADA8000 you mentioned.
Of course, depends on your system if you prefer and/or have Firewire available.

Definitely look in to the steinberg mr816x. My personal opinion on it is rock solid drivers, stable at extremely low latencies, beautiful AD conversion and DA conversion that can compete with the Lynx Aurora or anything under 3k.

828 and an ada8000 will do the trick nicely

If you go for 828 mk1 which I still use, you could get that setup for about £250-300 gbp (second hand 828, new ada)

That's what I have been using for about 6 or 7 years. I have recorded several commercial albums on this setup. Sounds a treat, no problems.

hope this helps

just saw your query about 828 mk1 price

They go for about £100 here in UK, so I guess $160 or so is about right.

They are rock solid. updated firewire drivers from motu all the time. simple as you like and bloody reliable. They sound better than the later ones in my opinion. Until mine blows up I am not changing a thing! I don't use the preamps though

what about an 828MKII for $250?
is that a better deal? misterlong said the MKI's sound better than the later ones,
i'm might see if i can get the MKI for a little less than what he wants for it.

I like the Mk1 but I believe the Mk2s are good too. They have more functionality so if you can get it at a good price you won't be disappointed. $250 sounds pretty reasonable. I can't speak for the reliability and stuff cos i have not used one in anger. My Mk1 has been in full on active service now for about 10 years without a hiccup!

If you can get the MK1 for about 160 or so it is worth it. Probably worth it at 195 really. Take your pick though I guess

828mk1 has no word clock so you're limited to sync via adat lightpipe in which in my experience was fine but I upgraded to a 896mk3 for stability.

Hey Misterlog
Thank you for all your awesome help!!
I have another question, i was able to buy a
828mk1 for dirt cheap because the main volume
Potentiometer is bad, i tride cleaning it with some
Contact cleaner but it was a no go and it looks like
Im going to have to replace it, my question is do you ever use
The monitor level knob at all? And does it have any significant
Use i was thinking of swapping these two pots since the main
Volume seems more important. I contacted motu tech support
Via message so who knows of they will ever reply? Its not a common
Looking pot or something i can find here locally.

Thx
Neb

sorry man, missed your question.
Glad it is working for you. I tend to just use the main pot.
Glad you like the conbo. I have been using it for ages. Just be careful not to crank up the mic/line preamps on the ada8000. If you are careful they can be well useable.
Really nice and simple with a great sound for the money!
Enjoy

I use an RME HDSPe AES card. 16 channels on AES/EBU. You might consider something like the RME RayDAT card, which uses ADAT, and a pair of the Behringers. This offers you a lot of flexibility and room for expansion.

Mate!
Glad you are happy. I got this setup as a "stop gap" about 8 years ago. I have never felt any need to change it so I still use it!!
Couldn't be happier with it!!
Stays out of the way sonically, is dead simple and just lets you get on with makin some sweet music!!
Have fun dude.
