Emotiva Pro monitors

I picked up the 6s and I couldn't be happier with the performance for the price.....and that seems to be consensus.

What made you choose the 6's over the 4's or 5's?

I have the 4s, and I use them for general music listening, and am very happy with my choice.

Anyone using these for real life studio applications - mixdown/mastering, etc?

Just purchased the Airmotiv 6's

I'll be using them for monitoring in a home project studio. I won't really be using them for final mixes or mastering. Still, getting a solid demo off the ground requires accurate monitoring so these will get heavy use in terms of tracking (mostly mic'ed electric guitars, vocals, and synths).

I'm upgrading from the KRK Rokit 6's. My room is very well-treated so I can safely say the KRK's are harsh in the mid range and have an indefinite bass sound (to my ears, anyway). These are the two areas where I am hoping the Airmotivs are an improvement. Obviously the KRK Rokit line is designed to be entry level and affordable so you get what you pay for. The question with Emotiva is do you get MORE than what you pay for?

I'll post my impressions once they arrive. I'm pretty optimistic though. I've never owned ribbon tweeters so I'm curious how I'll like those.

Emotiva seems like they are about to make a push to be taken seriously in the pro monitor world.

The Stealth is scheduled to come out in the 1st quarter of next year and looks to be a direct competitor with the Adam A7x and A8x (and similarly priced).

First Impressions

So I got the Airmotiv 6's set up. I got to track some guitars with them today.

As expected, the low end is much more defined than in the KRK Rokit 6's. And the mid's and high's aren't overly metallic or harsh.

I suspect this has something (though not everything) to do with the rear porting on the Airmotiv's. I've got the speakers well away from the nearest wall and have absorption materials behind them so I think I'm minimizing the effect of rear-ported reflections.

After some initial playback of some commercial music to get acquainted with the speakers, I decided to use both the LP and HP cuts on the back of the monitors. I played around with various levels (-2, -4) and ultimately settled on -2 db for both low and high. At the 0 positions the music I was listening to sounded overly boomy and overly bright. I think this has more to do with my room (and ears) than anything else. After employing the low and high filters, everything evened out nicely.

I tracked some really fuzzed out rock guitar. I played a Les Paul through a Bogner Duende with a Menatone Chawbox octave fuzz. The mic I used was an Avantone CV-12 tube condenser running through a Grace M-101 and into the UAD Apollo. I've used this same signal chain countless times but I was really impressed with the midrange on the Airmotiv's. I could really hear the harmonics in the guitar tone clearly.

All in all I think these speakers are great for anyone wanting solid monitors for under $1000. I'm surprised that they remain relatively unknown. I'll be keeping my eye on the Stealth series, too, when they come out.

Airmotiv 5's with D-Box

I'm running my D/A through the Dangerous D-Box and into the Emotiva Airmotiv 5's. I upgraded from the Apogee Mini-DAC and KRK Rokit 8's (which I still have).. These little speakers are amazing. I jumped on the 5's finally after seeing them at $399 and they're a steal. I have both the Airmotiv's and KRK's connected to the D-Box and I get noticeably more accurate, less harsh highs from the Airmotiv's and amazingly, the bass response is deeper and much tighter sounding than the KRKs. Not just at the credit of the monitors, but the combo of the D-Box and these monitors seemed to just double the width of my stereo image. I can also virtually "see" where each instrument is. I'm very satisfied and these will last a long time I think and make great "B" monitors when I'm ready to drop a couple grand on some Dynaudios or Genelecs.
