Well, for the price you can't expect the best pickups, LOL.

I had a Squier Strat that sounded more Strat than many Strats though.

I've been offered a new Yamaha BB424x for 415€. That is quite tempting as it is such a good offer.

So, I need a bass for recording purposes for around 500-700€. The only condition I have is the bass should be easily available in the EU market. I don't want to order anything across the sea.
The music in style is acoustic/electric pop-rock.

Would you have any suggestions? Thanks.
You'll never go wrong with Fender Precision Bass for Recording.

...or Fender Jazz Bass...
String choice is important tho..
Different strings different (colour) of sounds.
of course many other things too (technique, signal chain,..etc)

Never thought to ask, but is the person who will be playing this actually a bass player or is this just a studio instrument?

But once again back to the Mexican Precision or Jazz. I have played a lot of them and they are a great bass for the money.

Craigs List is bound to have some local to you that you can try... or whatever your local equivalent is. In the UK it is GumTree, for instance.

Wow. Good price. Go for it. This bass is a steal even for 1415.

I picked up an Ibanez SR500 a couple years ago for recording. I love that bass. Really versatile tone-wise, and super smooth and easy to play. Sounds good with flatwounds as well as roundwounds. Active pickups, quiet electronics. 3 band EQ right on-board. And sweet/unique Mahogany finish too.

Sometimes you can find a used Guild Pilot bass for cheap. Other times they can be quite expensive. I got one once for $500 and it is by far the best bass I've ever played, with the exception of the EMG pickups. They come with active EMG pickups which I'm not a big fan of, but that's easy to replace, and then you'll have a bass with one of the sweetest necks and bridges you'll ever play! The build quality on these far surpasses even the American made Fenders in my opinion. So if you run across a cheaper one, be sure to check it out!

As for the DI, there are many good options depending on what you want to spend. One of my favorites and by far the most economical is the ART Tube MP. $30 brand new, and you get a DI that will allow you to dial in all the grit you want. They're not good for much else because their high frequency response is horrible, but that "problem" seems to work well with the bass guitar frequencies. I'd prefer it over some pristine clean DI box or your standard interface pres, anyway.

I own one of the current production MIJ Fender Mustang (short scale) basses. Around $700 USD new. I'm primarily a guitar player, so the size really appeals to me. But I am really astounded at how big this little bass sounds. Just a perfect sound for my style.

I never use any DI Box to record my bass guitar (Fender Precision with Flatwound strings).
Just plug straight in (usually to the Avalon VT737SP Tube MicPre-Compressor before) the Audio Interface.
If (very rarely) need a real amp & cabinet & room sound, will do re-amp later.

get it. perfect for your needs. should be a solid instrument. have it checked first if you dont' play though to ensure the neck is good and frets are solid etc.

yes you do. you use the di box built into the avalon. that IS a di. DIs match impedance to the instrument so your tone doesn't suck when recording straight. if you plugged directly into a line in your tone would suck due to impedance mismatch.

Yes, I mean not the dedicated (DI Box) one. Usually many audio interface available now is already care of that impedance matching in their input.

In case somebody is interested or reading this and in the same situation that I was and is thinking about getting a new bass I thought I'd update this topic to let you know that I decided to go with the BB424x(sunburst). So far seems like a decent bass for home recording purposes. I need to test it over a longer period of time to really get to know the instrument but my first impression is positive.
