My wife gave me a matched pair of KEL HM-1's for my birthday last year. So far all I've used them on are group vocals (chorus for a Broadway show-type tune) and they worked like a charm: mercifully unhyped, with a smooth, unprepossessing treble response that is way more tolerable than any other $100 mic I've ever heard. Looking forward to trying them on woodwinds, strings, and piano.

I`m been thinking of them too, but it seems the price doubles when importing to Europe, makes me consider other possiblities in that price (double) range.

Since you didn't specify the model I'll pose another question. Has anyone tried the new P-1 condensers? I have found the HM-1 useful and I am curious how the higher end Kel compares with Josephson, Neumann, Schoeps, Gefell ect.

Their sdc is obviously MBHO / Haun, they are in good reputation.

I am really pleased with the HM-1. It is quiet, has a good output level and has a very smooth sound.

Very (_very_) lightly reminiscent of the MXL69ME in terms of colour and smoothness.

Regards,
David

I've heard both the Kel's and the Studio Projects, tho not back to back, but there's a night and day difference between them soundwise!

The Kel HM-1 has a flatter response, with the C1 being extremely bright - horses for courses, but I think the Kel is more versatile: a buddy uses the Kel's for 'live' shows, and they sounded great, as well as seem to handle the abuse of the road. The C1 could be fine for the right vocalist, but I find them too shrill for almost anything else.

Good luck in the quest,

The Kels are good at taming unwanted sizzle, so think about that as a choice for OH's. Very useful on toms... it's hard to go wrong with these for the price. Try them out and return them in three weeks if they don't do it for ya. Give them a shot!

Anyone compared HM-1 vs B-1 and Audio Technica 2020 as HM-1 seems to be too expencive to buy in Europe?

I have an HM 7U. I have owned other low end mics such as the C1, Rode NT1, Marshal LDCs, an AT4040, AT4050, Joly Modded MK 12, Rode NT4, sm57, Heil PR-30, etc and this is by far and away my favorite mic for my vocals and acoustic guitar. Although the AT4050 is superb on the acoustic guitar too. The Kel sounds great out of the chute, no eq'ing around, stands out in the mix and with my DAV, Mytek and Samplitude it just gives me the warm and fuzzies. Has a big, three d sound.

I was wondering this very thing a few minutes ago on another thread, so sorry for the double-ish posts in the forum today but maybe someone else will chime in on this thread.

So you like the HM-7u better than even the +$300 AT4050? I've been looking at these two mics among other for recording (mostly) rap vocals. And I already have an SM7b so I'm looking at condensers.

Anyone else compared the HM-7u to the AT4050 or 4040? If so, or you've compared it to other mics in the price range on the application I'm doing (rap vocals), I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks

The Kel is my favorite on my voice. Finally, I am happy with what I am hearing. I will never sell my AT4050 since it captures my acoustic guitar like it was made for that. So, in comparing the AT4050 with the acoustic guitar, I would say they are pretty much in the same league. I might have to buy another kel at some point. Which one next? Hmmm..... I see that Chris is happy with his new Hm -2.
