starting my "home studio" :p

hello

I'm new into recording and I want to get some gear to record my band's songs. my budget is rather small <about 1500-2000$>, so this gear should be really cheap.

I want to heave gear to record bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, vocal and keys. I do have cheap phonic mixer <mu1822x>, which I'm using for live performance, one old shure sm58 and 3 at mb3k, cheap vocal mics.

can you advice me what should I buy? I guess I shuld exchange my music card <at the moment some old sb live> and get some good recording program <now using Vegas>.

I'll be very glad for your advices

if you dont have a dedicated computer then i suggest a stand alone recorder. Yamaha AW series are a good place to start. couple of 57s and a DI to start

oh and chuck that phonic in the bin unless you need an oversized door stop.

Direct Injection box, basicly it converts a high impedence source like a guitar/bass into a microphone level signal so you can send it down a long cable and get it into your recorder.
no offence but if you have to ask questions like that i dont you are ready to embark on having your own studio or doing your live stuff.
start researching and reading as much as you can.

Personally I would consider:

Presonus Firepod, 8 mic preamps (has DI on board as well) and dedicated monitor outputs, ease of use and comes with Cubase LE. During April Presonus has a mail in rebate that you can cash in for a free 4 channel headphone amp, which you'll need for band members.

Audix Fusion 6 mic pack, on a budget they are a great choice.

MXL V67i condensor mic, nice budget mic with choice of 2 different capsules to better suit it for vocal or instrument recording.

Tascam VL-X5 monitors, unhyped budget speakers that deliver tons for the price

$1350 roughly, plus you'll need stands etc.

The upgrade you do to your PC will be a little PCI firewire card for the Firepod, if you don't already have firewire. Hopefully your PC is fairly modern and running XP?

That's why he listed it in "Low End Theory."

Ask anything you want...that's what it's for.

Back on point,

Warheads got a decent package there with Cubase/Presonus...And you can't go wrong with the Audix stuff, focused great sounding mics...I prefer the i5 over the Shure 57 for snare, gtr cabs. etc.

ok, so when I'll have presonus firepod, headphone amp, monitors, audix fusion 7 <fits me better than fusion 6>, I'll have to buy mics for other applications than drums <electric guitar, vocals, maybe acoustic guitar, but it's not the most important thing>.

for that can mxl v67i be used for? for sure for vocals, but for something else also?

and how to record keys and bass? bass via amp or directly through recording pre?

will be glad for any advices

Actually, Low End Theory is meant for 'being on a budget' rather then 'being new to recording', a misconception often made.

So I agree with aussie-techie that it's good to inform yourself as much as possible first by browsing a lot on GS, reading some recording books, surfing the web, ... That way, you'll get a better idea of what you want and need, so you can also ask more specific questions, and can actually use the advice being given at that point.

Good luck

Shop second hand as the new stuff will depreciate like the woman you fancied the night before on a skinful of cheap beer.

Welcome mate.

Its good to see you know what an outstanding drummer is.

All i can say is please try to make music and stay the hell away rom this place.

Get your gear quickly and keep on tweaking it.

This place will kill you.

I agree. If you have no idea of the kind of gear you need, how can you judge the advice being given? If you don't know what a DI is, and for exmple somebody says: "you need this expensive Avalon DI, it's the only was to record a bassguitar!!", what will you end up with? With stuff you might not want or need.

The poster actually got answer to what a DI is anyway, but I find it good advice from aussie_techie to inform yourself some more by reading around. That's no shame, most people will start out that way.

@ Axiz7, as for the misconception what Low End Theory is meant to be about, I think I can say as a Low End Theory moderator that I know what the meant purpose is.

Again: Low End Theory is about creative, affordable solutions to get as good recordings/mixes/... as possible. It never was meant as a place for beginners to learn the basics. A beginners place is very valuable and noble, Low End Theory just never was meant to be that, as there's enough of such forums out there already. And that's no offence to anybody or to any other forum, it's just a choice we've made to fill in an existing gap.
