Safesound Audio P1 vs Tracking Toolbox (first impressions)

OK, someone in another thread asked me about the new SafeSoundAudio Tracking Toolbox vs the old P1.

Today I had the chance to play around a little with the two boxes. Here my comments:
First of all the new tracking toolbox feels more heavy than the P1. The new knobs are smooth. Because of the formfactor it is better not to have very big fingers...
;-)
Unfortunately the new unit has no power-switch like the P1.

Compressor, Expander, Monitoring Section: I didn't notice a difference. Same noisefree and powerful headphone output. I can't hear a difference in the compressor section, same smooth compression. I don't care much about the expander, seldom use for it, for me no significant difference.
On the Tracking Toolbox you can switch the limiter in/out of the signal flow. In combination with the compressor you have now much more flexibility. Big advantage.

Now the biggest improvement: the Mic Preamp. I used the P1 a lot and liked it a lot. But sometimes I missed "something" from the mic preamp. I found it not much different from the Fireface 400 preamps. Clean and versatile but sometimes a bit boring. The preamp alone I think my DAV BG1u has more of that "high end touch".....
The Mic Preamp in the Toolbox is definitely a step up. It has a rounder and smoother overall qualitiy. A full low end and crisp but smooth highs. Very nice! It has that "little something" a high quality preamp should have.

Ok, that's it for now. I'm looking forward to my next real recording session. I will do a direct comparison with my DAV BG1u.

First I was thinking about selling my P1, but it's still a nice sounding box and the compressor section alone is worth keeping it....

cheers
Markus

P.S. the Tracking Toolbox is definitely not "low end". I think I should post it in the "High End" Forum.... ;-)

Thnx for that. Look forward to a comparison with the DAV. Inclined to keep my P1, and slog'n'slut my way to something like an Orpheus or a Fred Forsell designed front end. And BTW, is the THD spectrum on the Toolbox as sweet as on the P1?

ok, I am just back from a recording session this afternoon....
As always the TT worked like a charm. got some nice results recording electric guitar with a beyer m160. the TT has lots of clean gain, no noise issues at all.
the preamp is at least as good as the dav.
works great with my vocal mics too (AA CM47SE, TLM 67).

in the meantime I sold my P1 and got a warm audio wa12 to have a little color cause I had only very clean preamps in my mobile rack: dav, rme, TT....
I would have kept the p1 but I replaced also my ff400 with an UFX, so I needed some cash...
;-)
the TT always makes tracking easy with great results as its name "tool for tracking" states.

It costs 799 euros here in germany and it is worth every cent.
great tool, highly recommended!

cheers

Hi Markus,

How would you compare the WA12 (without the Tone engaged) to the TT pre? I understand that the WA12 is actually a very clean pre when the Tone button isn't on.
