Sennheiser MD421

Do they require phantom power? I was recording toms yesterday thru an API 3124 but I couldn't get a signal unless the phantom power applied...?

Beware, I have two broken 421's I took them to sennheiser's distributor. The guy at the repair shop told me that long periods of phantom (9-10 hours) will damage the capsule and the only way to fix the mic is to replace the capsule which is around 150€. And phantom also diminishes the sensitivity of 421 while you are applying it.
