Talking BEHRINGER MINIMON MON800 and MINIAMP AMP800

ok, so I know what most people on this board think of Behringer products. However, I'm building a project studio, and I'm a student so I don't have tons of money to invest into pieces of gear that aren't going to make a real difference to the sound of my recordings.

So, that said, has anyone here tried either of these products? The MINIMON MON800 is a monitor control system with a talkback mic, and the MINIAMP AMP800 is a four channel headphone amplier with two sets of inputs so I could make more than one heaphone mix.

These are both new products, so I just wanted to see if anyone has tried them yet. And at $40 a pop, if they are even just a little better than totally sucking, then I'll probably look into buying one or both of them. So, please let me know what you think. And, of course, smartass comments are welcome, as I'm sure there will be plenty of them

I haven't used either but the headphone amp doesn't look half bad. If you get one let me know how it sounds - I may have to get one too.
Cheers!

I'm looking at these too- the minimon looks exactly like the samson, just subtle differences. I have the ADA8000, I like it, but I have a little behri mixer and it has a lot of hiss. I may give these a try though. I'm sure the headphone amp is fine, and the minimon can't make the sound any worse than the stereo receiver I am using to power my monitors right now (hopefully a temporary situation!).

the minimon is a little better than the samson...

for 40 bucks damn much better than the mackies big knob (in price vs quality)

Well, these really don't go in your signal chain at all... I wouldnt run my mains through that minimon thing. But lots of people have used their headphone amps, and i was really considering that minimon thing just because i don't have any sort of integrated talkback right now, besides pull up a fader and use a mic channel if i need talkback... $40 is pocket change, and worth it for just that feature. Just mho.

I'd personally just save money for a bigknob. Might be able to find them on ebay cheaper

mackie is just overpriced behringer. look at the presonus central station, it has an all passive signal path so it wont color the sound. its likley the device i will get when i need a dedicated monitor controler and im not ususally a fan of presonus.

I got a minimon 800 to "get me along" until I find a used SPL MTC.

I was actually shocked at how bad it sounds in various configurations. It's a noisy little SOB. It introduces an awful, grainy buzz in various configurations. When comparing my monitors hooked to audio card direct vs through minimon, it most certainly collapses the stereo field.

However, with that said, with proper settings, I think it can be used for non critical use.

For $40 its got a great feature set, and could be quite usable in some very low end situations, but I'll move mine out the garage stereo system when I get my SPL or coleman.

ditto...same here.

i also have a behringer 4 mono + 4 stereo mixer which is used exclusively for the headphone mix... recently connected one of my alternate monitors to it (as i don't have a monitor controller) and quickly moved back to using my patch bay to route signals between my main and alt. monitors. Serious loss of bass and severe 'grainyness'.

i will certainly not agree that mackie is just overpriced behringer... maybe feature wise, certainly not sound quality and reliability wise.

.02,

self.

Well, yeah, and you have to baby both of them if you don't want them to break.

I've been a Behringer user in the past (still have the Truth active monitors), but I do have to laugh at them copying Samson. I have the Samson Control C, only because it was $100, which was in our budget. So they copy *that* and charge $40? Why not rip the Big Knob and sell it for $75 instead?

I had a Behringer powerplay headphone amp which took 5 years of sitting mostly untouched in a rack to go intermittent on all 4 channels due to crap switches that are unnecessary to begin with. Channels started to fail after 2 years. Oh, the power switch fell into the unit about the third time it was pressed. Did you know there's a Behringer City in China?? I'm much happier with a Furman distribution system now.

I am now.a China free facility, except a CMEmidi controller which sucks. And SE Reflexion Filter which is made like agricultural equipment

I have two of the Behringer MiniAMP 800 headphone units; they work really well. I've mounted them to small speaker stands (using velcro tape) and I usually leave them with the vocalist or guitar player so they can control the sound level. The pan feature is especially good, when dealing with vocalists that like to only monitor with one ear; you send the signal entirely to one side to avoid bleed from the mix.

You can chain two of these units together to have eight channels of headphone mix; there's nothing like them at this price point on the market (that I am aware of). By chaining two units together, I was able to record a live off-the-floor session with a few players and each was able to control their own headphone levels.

I've used both, they are both awesome

I still have the minimon in my setup, and will probably be buying a new miniamp to replace the one I stupidly gave away
