Thread Starter | Portable Recording/Performance Computer
So I had a gig the other night and I was looking at this wobbly table that I setup holding my mixer, my audio interface, and my girlfriend's macbook pro, and I realized that I need a new computer. So I put my core2duo Macbook Pro on ebay (along with a few other things), and decided to plan out a new build. The goal is low latency, 24bit 96kHz, live show/recording studio on the go. My band plays two midi keyboards and a midi drumset through logic (Superior Drummer+VSTs) so this will be the box for that. I'm going to build the following elements into a wooden suitcase (unless I can figure out how to fit them into a Haliburton). Mac Mini. i7 (same quad as the macbook pro), 8GB of RAM, 2x 7200RPM 500GB HDD, Intel HD3000 graphics (HDMI+Mini Display Port out) Dell u2211h. Sapphire Pro 40 Apple Wireless Keyboard Magic Trackpad Seagate Freeagent goflex 1.5 TB. Lacie 1TB Firewire drive (eventually) (for samples/recording). The suitcase will have a hinged lid with the Dell u2211h mounted to it. The "Top" of the suitcase (where the handle would usually go) will fold down with the magic trackpad and apple wireless keyboard mounted to it. The whole thing will measure 23.75"x14.25"x9.25". When you open the computer you will have access to all of the components which will be affixed using velcro for easy removal/replacement. The whole project will cost less than $1600 (excluding components that I already have). I also have a i7-875k desktop hackintosh that I can use for workhorse stuff, though I think that this will have comparable benchmark results. Thoughts?
