Audio input peaking gain all the way down

Hello there,

did a search got ideas but just want to confirm.

I finally got my setup working and recording clear signal last night. Invited a friend over for a session today, signal from mic was peaking even with gain all the way down on pre. Its like the mic was on steroids. The gain knob still increased/ decreased gain but was still peaking at the lowest setting.

i have. AT 3060 (few years old)- Focusrite saffire 6 usb (pretty new)

Faulty mic or pre amp or user error?

Cheers

What were you micing? If it was something loud (drum/guitar cab close mics), then you might need a pad.

were you plugging the output of your pre into an XLR input on your interface?

Don't know that combo specifically, but it's fairly common; hot mics, loud sources. I can easily get nominal record level QTC-1 direct into RME ADI-8 with it set for +4, and it can still need a pad on loud kit hits for example.
