Thread Starter | Shure S55 ???
Hello I am thinking of getting a Shure S55 for use at rehearsels and gigs, but I am unsure if its worth the money...would I be better off soundwise getting a shure sm86 or some other mic ? Hope someone has tried the S55 live...I have searched the web, but find little to none comparisons and or reviews of it... I see the sm86 a has a somewhat better freq range (50-18) whilst the S55 has 60-17) Regards Riffhex |

We're talking live vocals, so the frequency range isn't really the point since vocals don't go that low, and above 15k in a live setting well... The 55 definitely has a sound, pretty old-school/crunchy and looks super cool. The 86 is a condenser, completely different beast. If you're looking for an accurate mic, then no the 55 probably isn't for you, if you're looking for something different and vibey, give it a try. |

This is a mic that sells as much for it's vintage looks as it's sound. If you are using it for vocals, the freq response of either is fine. Personally I prefer the beyer M-88 or M-69 for stage vocals, there are some Audix models that are quite clean, too.

thanks for quick replies ![]() Yes, I was afraid that the S55 is overprised. But it would be used for concerts simply cause it adds a cool visual effect... Today I use an sm58 at rehearsals and I simply want a new mic I was thinking of an sm58 beta...but then I came upon the S55(red and black) and the look of it really is astonishing but is it equal to the sm58 beta or worse(overprized bling) ?

From what I've been told by a Shure rep the s55 (super 55) is a beta58a capsule In a different body. I worked for GC for 4 years and when the super55bcr (black and red) came out, jack white bought 6 of them from us.

Yeah, it's a case of "it looks like it sounds good", IMHO. But if that's what you're after........

It's a good mic that doesn't choke the vocal to a specific range. It is pretty natural and pretty clean for a dynamic. IMO it's better than a 58 and competes well with mics in the same price range with the benefit of looking cool.
