E-Mu 1616m need an outboard pre?

Hello,

please excuse my newbness if there is already a thread on this topic. I looked but found nothing to my avail.

So I just bought a 1616m, waiting for it in the mail. It seems like alot of you gearslutterz seem to have pretty extensive knowledge about this mystical box. Now the A/Ds are supposed to be mastering grade, ok, great but what about the pres?

do i need to buy an external single channel pre to make this thing punch?

im doing hip-hop (just like your grandma and every one else), Im thinking about getting a Studio Projects VTB1 and swapping the tube for a vintage tube _______ (suggestions welcome).

Im going to be recording Vox, Guitar, Bass, and Input from turntable. Mainly interested in Vox.

FYI, I understand a 150 dollar preamp isnt going to be life changing, just want a punch and presence to help Waves do its job. Im going to be using Wave Diamond to bat clean-up.

The pre's are pretty good in the 1616m.

1820m pre's are weak though (I own one) They fixed this with the 1616m, would trade my 1820m for one any day.

Id say you don't need any external pre's with the 1616m at all, will be enough presence there.

thanks... I guess I will find out soon enough when it gets here Tuesday. If you could get a VTB1, would you still use it? or are the pres on 1616m better already?

Haven't heard the 1616m, but I own the 1820M..As stated, the pres on the 1820M are just " ok"..The biggest thing about the 1820M is, it's ok if you use a dynamic mic, but try and use the onboard phantom power, Forgitabout..!....BTW, I use external pres.....Good luck..

As I owned 2 VTB-1s, I was never really impressed about them for pres..They were very decent DIs tho'..!....Thing 'bout using a external pre is you MAY get some better noise rejection by it being outside the interface, but not necessarily better sonics at the VTB-1 price range..( YMMV)..Good luck

I already splurged on sweetwater and ended up getting that VTB1....

If you could swap a vintage tube for the stock one, what tube would you go for?

Not really shure about the tubes..I'd wait until you hear the VTB-1 you ordered..May turn out to be just what you need..!....It's a decent unit with good features..! Very easily to get good levels as it has good metering and very good ledgeable markings..The output fader comes in handy as well, as the insert..Don't forget to try the mic impedence selector ( on the back) for different mics..Good luck..

Check this thread out:

Lynx L22 vs. EMU 1616m - CLIPS

As said you wont need external pre's but oh well.

Ideally should have spent money elsewhere.

this thread is in its grave but...

got that vtb1 today... Im very happy with the solid state side of it... the tube side past 12 is shite, but It does edge out the pres on the 1616m ever so slightly (however, maybe I want it to so badly that my hearing is affected), however Id say its fuller and a touch prettier.

i will keep fiddling away, maybe in a month Ill disagree with this post.

Thanks to all for the help!!!!!!!!!
