To all those with hissing DSM3's, I just got word from repairs, the hissing is the result of a defective AMPBoard.

And this was definitely an entire batch from AUDIOMIDI, as all four DSM3s that I received had the exact same hissing problem.

I'm very relieved to finally have a definitive answer on this issue—I thought I was nuts for a while there... ^_^

And I can't wait to have my (non-hissing) DSM3s back - again, I absolutely love 'em.

I got a pair from AM and there is a slight hiss from them. I never really paid too much attention to it. I've pretty much just ignored it, but I guess no amount hissing is acceptable if they are supposed to be completely silent. Not to mention that what ever is causing the hiss now could be the cause of a failure in the future.

Is this fully covered by warranty (parts/labor/shipping)?

EDIT: This is copied from an SOS review of the DSM1's

"While not serious, I also noticed an audible, low-level hiss when listening close-up to the tweeters, and it didn’t change with the input-gain trim setting. It also seemed to be independent of the choice of analogue or digital inputs, and I recall the M-Audio EX66 speakers having similar traits. My guess is that this is related to the digital circuitry and processing."

Here's a link to a thread on the M-Audio forum about the BX8a's having the same problem. Seems like it runs in the family.

BX8a Deluxe -- tweeter hiss normal?
Yeah mine too, they're not dead quiet and the hiss doesn't increase in volume. I figured it was a byproduct of the onboard DSP (I only figured that because I've never owned a pair of monitors with onboard DSP).

One of my dsm-3's has a defective tweeter. It's been like this since I bought it. Crackles whenever anything is played through. Terrible. I am calling m-audio on monday to sort it out.

I also have the hissing issue. I bought these from audiomidi, so perhaps I was unlucky and got some of that bad batch. So upset right now.

Hopefully I am able to get this repaired without too much trouble. I haven't heard great things about their support. Anyone have any advice dealing with m-audio warranty repair?

I have read elsewhere (mainly M-Audio's forum) that replacement parts are no longer available for the DSM3.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

Nostrap, did you have any luck getting your defective tweeter fixed?

While I no longer own M-Audio monitors, that's a good question and probably worthy of its own thread in the "So much gear..." forum. But if the guys on the M-Audio forums are saying it, then it's probably true. I always wonder about my Yamaha speakers and how much it would cost/if I could even replace them need be.

Good luck
