Mxl V77 vs MXL V69 (replacing the old with the new)

My MXL V77 tube mic is creating a terrible crackle and hiss. It has to be the tube.
I bought this thing in 2001, & they dont make them any longer. However, MXL offered me a replacent at COST! So for $150 i will get an MXL V69... if i send my V77 back.

Does anyone know the key differences between them?
Frankly the idea of a V69 so cheap is pretty exciting.
It's way cool of MXL to make this offer when the mic is 5 years old.
What a rad company!

Also, I have the CAD M9... does the V69 sound anything like that?

I really like the V77, but a new V69 is better then a broken V77.

...MXL V69ME mics show up regularly (used) for about $200 on Ebay...I just sold mine to one of the other members on this site for about that much...but the opportunity to grab a V77 (even one that may need a new tube or a cap replaced) is much less common...if you want to try and diagnose the problem, I may be able to help you do that (as can many others here as well)...replacing the tube is fairly simple if you have even modest soldering skills...
...but if you'd rather get the new V69 and skip the diagnostic route, there's no doubt that the crew at MXL are amazing when it comes to customer service...Scott and his team have helped me on numerous occasion in solving any problem (I have owned quite a few of their products including two prized V77s with upgraded NOS 6072 tubes)...they go out of their way to take care of their customers and set a high bar for the competition...of course, Larry at ADK and Alan at Studio Projects are also terrific when it comes to customer support...

thanks for your help,
i think a brand new V69 would be more simple...
or maybe they would do the V6 exchange instead.

Honestly i think the PPA 2ube is the same mic as the V77,
so i will probably pick one of them up soon to replace that sound.

...not even close...it's a rebadged OEM Chinese mic (like the Nady TCM1050 under $200 on ebay)...the Nady TCM1100 comes the closest, but the V77 was built by 797Audio (one of the best of the Chinese manufacturers who also make Studio Projects mics)...the V77's 3 micron capsule had alot to do with it's sound...save up some more $s and go for the Studio Projects T3 (used for around $300 on ebay)...that's a "keeper"...

Good advice, thanks... I will look into the T3!

Damn, too many mic's not enought money to afford them all. Sometimes i wonder if just saving for 1 Vintage U67 would be better then having 20 cheap mics. I used a U67 last time I was in a big studio in town and NOTHING comes close on my vocal style.

It's true The Beatles only had 4 tracks, but they had SUCH KILLER mics!

last time my v69 had trouble with hiss and crackle it was not the tube but the powersupply. It stood on the floor for some time and got bit moisty. Storing it in a dry warm place after use fixed it.

I've had a similar problem with my v69. After changing the tube and realizing that didn't do it. I mess with the xlr connector on the power supply that goes to the mic and it turned out that not all the pins were contacting metal. I just bent each one of them a little bit, just so i knew they would touch and the problem disappeared. weird...i know. but it worked.

I'm a big fan of my MXL V77. Mine has the stock tube and I think it sounds great. I've used it on acoustic guitars and vocals with much success. This mic does not seem to be hyped, unlike the SP C1 I previously used. It has a very neutral, yet bright and musical sound. For the money, I'm VERY happy.

Here's one on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/MARSHALL-MXL-V77...QQcmdZViewItem

They generally end up going for about $200 + shipping, and since they are no longer in production, they will certainly hold their value.
