Thread Starter | RMS reading? squashed for fun
This is just screwing around. I piled up four compressor/limiters/squashers to the max, throwing all caution to the wind, just for fun. Ignore the song, the mix, the production, the EQ, the horrible sound, the performance, everything, just focus on the squish RMS. It's not listenable, obviously, and I am not trying to prove anything or show any one anything. It was just for fun. Just seeing what RMS level I got and if my meters are showing me right. I was showing around -6 to -8 mostly - if I'm reading it right? Can you download and tell me what RMS level your system shows? And how close have you gotten to 0 RMS ever? Is that possible without it being a white noise distorted mess? |

Anyone? RMS reading? I know it's hideous - just turn the volume off - it's only about 1 minute in length

Fun fact: you could theoretically get a track with an RMS value of +3 dB! The 0 dB reference for RMS, per international convention, is a full scale sine wave. The reason is so that the RMS and peak values for a sine wave test tone read the same value, even though the mathematically correct RMS calculation would be -3 dB. A full scale pulse wave of any kind (where the values are all at plus or minus full scale) will still show 0 dB peak value, but the RMS value on a properly calibrated meter will be about +3 dB. So, just take a square wave synth tone and max it out and you should be able to get RMS values above 0 dB! Cheers, Otto
