Thread Starter | SM7 on kick
...Sounds great Just did a gtr session for an album, and I noticedthe drums were mic'd up with an SM7 on kik, 2 sE ribbon mics for stereo "overall kit" sound, 57s snr top/bottom, 58s on toms. Mic pres were Yamaha digital desk (model? 01V maybe) No idea if the engineer used EQ or not but it all sounded fat and punchy.. Nice beefy kick. thumbsup

+1 It's my go to. Other options I have that it frequently wins over: Beta52 Beta91 D112 MD421 U87 Second place would go to Beyer M88 Want to hear: RE20 and of course U47

Funny you mention this. I have an SM7B and a D112. Usually, the SM7 ends up on kik and the d112 ends up on floor tom. This works especially well on a deeply-tuned rock kit where the floor tom fundamental is way down there anyway.

The SM7b isn't bad on kick, but the Heil PR30 is even better IMO. I also love the Beyerdynamic M69 on kick. thumbsup |

My favorite is the audix d6 but I have used the sm7 on the kick. Very usable.

| Was going to say that the SM7 can capture the punch of a bass drum pretty well but you need something for the subs below 100Hz. To be honest I actually find the SM7 to have some similar characteristics to the Beta 52 (my normal goto mic) on bass drum. However you certainly can't use a Beta 52 on vocals!

Yeah it works! With the settings on flat it's meaty and punchy. I like it on beater side for some more click attack. Still, my favorite is Beta 52 for single micing. The SM7B ends up on hihat sometimes.

Anyone able to compare the SM7b inside kick to Beyer Opus 99, EV ND868, or ATM25? I have an SM7b, and am wondering about a dedicated dynamic mic for inside the kick.

As we are in the realms of the low end theory I thought that I could be brave enough to mention an alternative large diaphragm dynamic to the the RE20 and SM7 which can be picked up quite cheaply... dare I say the Peavey PVM520. There are some RE20 and SM7 users here on ebay that claim that the Peavey PVM520 is a very similar sounding mic. I recently bought a PVM520 just recently as an inexpensive alternative to my other kick mics that feature a more tailored frequency curve and have been pleased with the results so far. Looking forward to giving it a proper workout during the next couple of weeks, not just on kick but also floor tom and guitar/bass amp. |

"Peavey" is brave, but "Behr*nger" is much, much braver |

Always like using the Glyn Johns method myself. 2x AKG 414 O/Heads 1X Audix D6 1X 57 Snare Really captures the performance nicely. |
