Question about Reaper...

I am a noob to the forum who has used Audacity to edit and track my live concert recordings. I record from a mic stand into an Edirol R-09HR. Lately I've also been plugging into the soundboard with a separate Edirol R-09.

My problem is syncing the 2 recordings. For example, a recent show at just over an hour and a half in, the one recording is faster by .191 of a second. Audacity will only alter speeds of recordings by up to thousandths of a second. This is not acceptable as I need something more precise to sync my recordings perfectly.

The question I have is:

If I purchase Reaper, can I make a .0000335% change to a WAV file's speed?

Alt+clicking the edge of audio and dragging time stretches to whatever you want it to.

How the hell do you delete stuff in Reaper? This program is extremely confusing. It may be more technically accommodating than Audacity, but it is also a lot more difficult to do simple shit.

I have 1 min and 10 sec of track I want to get rid of in the beginning of the recording. How do I delete it? From what I've been trying so far, it only seems to be hidden.

AND

If I have two tracks open in Reaper, how do I select and change the speed of one to sync it with the other without adjusting both?

You can split the item at the cursor "S" then delete, just right click and scroll to option to remove. Or you can shorten the wavefile by dragging from the beginning or end of the file to where the recording starts. Put the cursor on the edge of the file and you will get a bracket looking cursor then drag it to the position you want.

Go to the Reaper Forums and look at some of the videos b4 you start whinging anymore like everyone else does ok?

Really? I had reaper and it's pdf guide open for about 7 hours yesterday. I posted on here and at the reaper forums. I didn't get any responses until after I gave up for the night.

Not saying reaper isn't good, but it's a lot less self-explanatory than Audacity. there's definitely a learning curve with this program. Also, I am a self taught recording person. This means that half the stuff in the guide is jargon that I don't grasp.

There is a Free video here on Navigation.
Reaper Explained by Kenny Gioia

If you've read the manual and you can't work it out after 7 hours, I don't know if I can help someone with special needs, I can only tell you what the manual says after all!

Haha. It's not that I can't it's just that when you're in over your head and inundated with new information on how not to be in over your head it takes some time to absorb the information.

I'm off to check out that video. Thanks for letting me be your dartboard.

Welcome to the forums. For REAPER related questions, I'd stick with the REAPER forums. You won't have to wait long until someone helps you out. Stick with REAPER. You won't regret it. Once you get your head wrapped around its workflow, you'll be golden. Keep in mind that moving from Audacity to ANY fully fledged DAW would make your head spin (especially if you don't understand the jargon). Good luck with it!

Audacity is a much simpler program that Reaper or pretty much any other DAW.. and it does a LOT less - so it's understandably easier.

If you're totally unfamiliar with DAW terms, etc - I can see it being frustrating.. and after using sequencers and later DAWs since the DOS days - I can say that none of them are 'simple' for a newbie.

Look on youtube for the Reaper videos by Pipeline Audio and RogetMusic - they have some good 'getting started' things to go with.

Also - pick up the Reaper Power book off of Amazon.. totally worth it.

Reaper is kind of weird at first, but once you assimilate, you do start digging it.

When I first started using it, I was all 'WTF THESE LANES FOR MULTIPLE TAKES ARE ********!'. Now I boot up Pro Tools and I'm all 'WTF WHY CAN'T I SEE ALL MY TAKES AT ONCE WITHOUT TAKING UP MY ENTIRE SCREEN'.

I can't speak for the Reaper forums, but on several occasions I've told people who I'm about to record 'Sure! I can do that for you. Tomorrow at noon, you say? I'll be there!', when it's 5PM the night before. Then I go into the Reaper IRC and say 'Guys. I'm doing this tomorrow and I told my client I know how to do it and I have no idea how to do it. How do I do it in Reaper?', and they've helped me out every time. The Reaper IRC is a great place to go for help. They're in the #reaper channel at irc.mixxnet.net

If your talking about the "Home Recording for Beginners" By Geoffery Francis that comes with the download than I can understand what's wrong. Francis' book is good for anyone who knows, in an intermediate capacity, what they're doing. It's almost more of a brush up, but the lessons section is a huge pain.

I'd suggest just looking around on the forums unless you want a headache from hell. (I think it's his writing style...or maybe the font) I've never really felt the need ( cause I like to make things hard on myself) to look up any videos, but I'd suggest it if you're having a hard time. There are literally tons of them out there.
