Sytek vs Mackie Onyx 800r

The Sytek you can get for around 800 used, 4 channels...or a 800r new for 900, but you get 8 channels...what would you suggest?

Depends what you are doing....

The Sytek is a "color" pre-amp if I'm not mistaken. the Onyx is designed to be clean.

I own the Sytek and have used the Onyx. I thought the sytek sounded a lot better than the onyx. Been very pleased with them so far, had them about a year now. One thing to consider is that the Sytek does not have converters built in like the onyx does. ALso you can get the burr brown op amps in 2 channels of the sytek for a little coloration. I'd recommend the sytek.

Sytek is not a color pre-amp. I own one and I love it. Even the burr brown are not that colored. It is a very fast pre-amp. great on drums, but i don´t love it in vocals or distortion guitar amps...I can´t say anything about the onyx ( i own a vlz1604) but i think it is a completly diferent gear. It will offer you much more than the sytek, only not sure how it will sound....

Yeah I like the idea of having some line in for keys, and the imdepence for the first 2 channels...I just can't seem to find many reviews on here of the 800r...i know the Sytek gets a lot of good reviews, i'm curious of the sound of the mackie

Those Onyx preamps are nice, and the converters on those 800R boxes are very good. Both two different animals though!

I have the 400F (recently purchased from War, the guy who posted just before me, awesome to do business with) which has the same pre's as the 800R. In my so-far limited experience, I'm quite happy with them.

The ONYX series gear as a whole has been getting really great reviews everywhere. I don't think I've seen a negative review yet.
