Oram 8T or Toft ATB?

Okay, some of you will see the same question on PSW. I don't care if you think John Oram is a jerk, or who did what at the original Trident, or eho should have rights to any name. What i do want is to get in some serious discussion of which of tehses very similar products is likely to be better, at least for me.

So far, in my analysis, the Oram is leading, mostly because it has a meter bridge available, and I like meters. The second factor is taht it is already shipping.

The Toft board is supposed to be modular, and teh Oram doesn't say.

In case you don't know about one or the other:

One would think a used Soundcraft Ghost would be the first choice here.

as far as I have been able to tell, the Ghost wouldn't be a step up from my Topaz. I'm also going to bail on this thread, as I seem to have missed several threads that are pretty close to it.

Don't forget to peruse the Toft ATB Thread Appreciation Thread in the Good News Forum.

Differences..

Putting aside the fact that i dont agree that the ATB is rightfully a Trident Series desk and that i am a Trident Audio delear, i would like to give my view on this topic.

The difference between these consoles in terms of their circuitry is a very clouded subject at the momment and nobody has had the opportunity to run audio comparisons between the two.

The Toft ATB uses the 80B EQ and has Toft preamps while the Trident Audio 8T uses 80B EQ and Trident S20 preamps, The ATB is designed by Toft and manufactured in China whilst the 8T is designed by John Oram and is made in the UK. Weather they will sound the same although they are both supposedly using the same circuitry is a completely different question and IMO i dont see how they could sound the same.

But as we only know for now that they use similar circuitry, lets pretend for a minute that the Toft ATB sounds like a Trident Audio 8T appart from the mic pre's. This would mean the only difference would be in the preamps making it a simple choice for customers based on what preamps they like the sound of best. (Trident S20 Vs Toft Pre's).

As for the rest of the circuitry, we'll have to wait and see what the ATB sounds like compared to the 8T before any descisions, as to which one sounds better, can be made.

Yeah but necessary, IMO.

Which is why I haven't gotten in line to buy either yet.

If it's well built, I don't care where it's built.

That's what will matter, especially when cost is factored in.

Both are inline designs, as asmall amount of research would have shown.

Im closing this..

why? Because I can. Its "no posts containing both the words Oram and Toft week" in low-end at gearslutz..

Also, comparing two products before anyone has even heard one of them. We dont do that in low-end if we can avoid it.......
