over the last couple years i've imported all my mpc drums into my motif, although when i track them i find that the same drums have increased clarity coming off the motif, they seem to lack the presence and warmth that they had coming off the mpc...what one piece of affordable outboard gear would you suggest i purchase to get my bang back?

QUOTE=RobR]your mpc.
True. The MPC has a very present sound,very identifiable. The Motif sounds too smooth. You've added an extra A/D and D/A conversion to the sounds as well. Running through a piece of gear will give you something but not what you lost. Scott Alger |

Scott Alger
i feel you on the smoothness of the the motif. but there has to be something i can do. the mpc cant be that crucial. there must be some kind of outboard module that can beef up my sound! | |

The MPC has built in filters (bass bump and top bump) on the output. I don't recall exactly what the frequencies are but you may be able to get them from the MPC's users group. Everything sounds a bit bigger through the MPC's, but it ain't magic. Sometimes it is exactly what you don't want. Good luck.

I felt pretty bad, as I wasn't being so constructive. But, yes, what Rodney said. This reminds me of stories I heard where people were taking sounds right off the ROMS of certain 80's sample based drum machines. After all the work they did, they listened to the results and declared, "oh shoot". |

I'm no electronics major....but I'm quite certain that...if you want the sound that comes OUT of something.... and you have that something at hand... Sometimes the obvious isn't always so obvious. I can't remember the specific piece, but I do remember reading about it being quite an expensive *oops*. |

Maybe Im misunderstanding the question but I have a different outlook than whats already been said. You are used to the knock your MPC had but it was slightly "muddy" compared to the motif. The issue has to do with the converters on each device. Im sure you already know that there is a bunch of info on that available. I am also assuming you go straight from your mp/motif to your recorder. So this info is based on that. Anyway... You need to put something between the motif and your recorder to make it sound nice. To be honest you need to do that with your MP or anything else if you really want isht to knock. Ive used MP's for 10 years and would feel the same way about the MP as you feel about the Motif if I didnt have someone running it through outboard for me. Stick with the motif if you like the clarity and workflow(unless you got a 3000 and love the seq get over the mp)and work on your chain. There are a lot of people on here that know more about this then me. Tony belmont has great info and I been learning to do it for myself by reading his material. So search for his posts. Anyway thats my 2cents.... Oh and turn the effects on the motif off they suck balls. Im talking about the global button it puts reverb on everything going out the unit including your drum samples. |
