Vocally Correct/Auto-tune a "Choir"

Soo, for my band's upcoming album, I decided that certain spots would sound really killer to have a bunch of shouting voices tucked in.

So I set up my 4050 in omni and layered a couple of takes with 5 people singing/shouting. The problem is they're not all superb singers...they were just friends. We don't really have the budget to hire a "choir" but we wanted that effect.

Honestly, it's not really bad, we can get away with what we have. I was just curious if AutoTune/Melodyne/Vocal correction software would be okay to tighten it up. (I ask this because I dont own a vox correction software, but where im going to mix it does).

5 voices per track
4-6 tracks

It definitely doesnt sound bad, but there is 1 spot that does stand out - the music cuts out and we have the main melody going and a counter melody with a "crowd" singing. At one point, the entire "crowd" goes a little sharp. It's something I didnt catch off the bat cuz it was a punch in.....anyway....

Thoughts? Like I said, it's usable without correction, and I dont want to suck the life out of it, but it would be nice to maybe tighten the crowd sound up.

Thanks everyone!

Vocally Correct/Auto-tune a "Choir"

Melodyne editor should work fine.

For me personally I will "tweak" until I am burned out on "tweaking" then I'll say, "Good enough!", and then I will crack open a beer or something

As its been said excellence is in the details, but dont let the details drive you crazy

I'd do it over, because otherwise I'd spend the rest of my life explaining, making excuses and apologizing for it. Once it is on the CD, there is no taking it back.

I like tracking groups multiple times (up to 10, but rarely) and then print the tracks to a stereo track. I've never been satisfied with augmenting a small group, it doesn't sound natural to me.

Are they sharp in all 6 takes?? To me group singing sounds a lot more "real" when not everyone is on key. But if a choir is what you were going for and it sounds like crap, then just do it again. The pain in the ass it will be to get all 5 people back will be much less than the pain in the ass it will be to try to fix that, and then have to hear it EVERY time you hear the song.

Good point.

That reminds me, you can download the Melodyne demo plugin for free and you can print it to tracks too (since you said you didnt have any tuning software at home)

Is "beer" mentioned anywhere in the lyric? If it is, don't bother tuning the vocals.

Perhaps just split the audio for just that phrase and pitch shift this region manually?

Might work well.

Oo good call on the melodyne demo. I'll try that first before calling everyone back in.

It's just 1 word, but each time it was sharp (resulting in 6 sharp takes for the first word). I guess I could also slice and dice some of the earlier takes and use those to replace that first word or phrase.

Either way, thanks guys, ya'll are the best!
