Tascam DM 24- yeah or nay?

I work at a guitar shop that deals mostly in used musical equipment. Someone recently brought in a Tascam DM 24. It is in good condition with the exception of the screen has lines going across. We priced it at $400 but with my discount I can get it for $280. I am looking for something with more channels to replace my Digi 002. I figure the preamps are either just as good if not slightly better, but my question is for an affordable digital board is it worth the price or is there something else on the market that is 16 channels and worth saving my money for?

The lines across the screen, that's common. As to the price worst case you have doubled your inputs (well, 10-more) by using ADAT and the SPDIF built-in to your 002, you have upgraded the converters a bit, you've added a control surface, and you have a nice mixer for what it is. The pres are, well nothing great nor do they have a lot of gain. But for that price, why not! And if you don't like it, turn around here and sell it for $600!

I've had a Yamaha 01v96 for a long time. While researching that purchase, I noticed the buzz on the DM 24 was not good, to put it mildly. The 01v96 only has 12 mic preamps, and I don't think you're going to find one for $400, but it's a much better board - and still in production (I think.)

I'm wondering how you're going to replace your 002. If you're using it with PTLE, aren't you stuck with it?

The DM24, while clean sounding, was one of the worst pieces of gear to ever grace our studio. We got rid of it after two weeks of canceled sessions and freeze ups.
