Arrow Beyer M201 vs. EV RE-15 vs. Audix i5 - in a shootout, who survives?

Hey everyone, I'm shopping around for dynamics and it's down to these three. I'd like to know what comparative character each of these mics has, and what applications for which they're best suited.

Obviously, there's a bit of range in the price/availability here, but I'd like to know which are everyone's favorite. Or, alternately, which would be something I wouldn't want to upgrade instantly after recording a few songs?

Just my opinion, I have a pair of i5s and now will never need to own a 57! It is a great mic for many things, from voice to snare to horns.

RE-15s are good for radio voices due to complete freedom from proximity effect. That's all I have used them for.

Haven't used a 201 but would like to know more about it.

I've been using RE15's for 27 years now, & finally bought my own 4 years ago because so many newer studios don't have them. I'll never get tired of what that mic does. Which, in an oversimplified nutshell, is...NOTHING. Unlike most other dynamic mics, it's easier to describe the RE15 by what it *doesn't* do. So when I *don't* want the midrange crunch of an SM57 or the >3k bite of an MD421 or the "condenser-like" treble of an MD441, I reach for the RE15. I guess it can be a bit nasal or band-limited on some sources. But it's a nice choice whenever you don't have a specific sound in mind; it's the great commitment postponer!

I seem to recall the M201 being a bit closer to that "Faux Condenser" sound, with greater reach and a more elevated high end, than the RE15 (though I don't have nearly as much experience with M201's so take that opinion w/ a big grain of salt).

Never heard an i5.

<Never heard an i5.>

Next time you would use a 57 try an i5. Love to hear what you think. Great mic!

The M201's another one that does most things a 57 does but better.

Also note it's hypercardioid.

I keep mine in my "band box" for miking a squeezebox on stage but I'm thinking of swapping it for a 57 so I can use the 201 in the studio instead.

I'm very happy with my i5. I've used it mainly on toms, percussion, guitar and horns. It seems to have a more "real" sound than a 57, but without the top-end sheen of a condensor. It's a great go-to instrument mic. I haven't tried it on snare yet, but some people reallt like there, while others don't.

Cheers,
Zach

Bob Ross - very helpful comments, thank you!

More more more! I'd like specifically differences in quality btw. M201 and the i5, or between m201 and the RE-15, etc. etc.
